How often have you seen a person hit a gorgeous
golf shot and learn the shot was made with a hybrid golf club? There is
talk everywhere on the course about how easy
these golf clubs are to hit a golf ball.

Untuk periode 60 tahun terakhir, Golf Digest memilih 'Metal Wood' sebagai peralatan golf paling inovatif yang merubah total wajah golf selamanya, termasuk dampaknya pada desain padang golf yang kian panjang. Untuk 5 tahun terakhir, kayaknya 'hybrid golf club' bakal jadi primadona. Tadi pagi aja, dari 12 ITB 77ers yang main bareng, yang bawa klab utilitas ini ada 7 orang.
So what has this led us to believe?
Hybrid golf clubs are primarily used when you need to hit the golf ball in the air for long distance and pinpoint accurate shots, more favorable than long irons and fairway woods.
Tapi ada syaratnya. You still need to have a decent golf swing, because a poor swing will still result in a bad shot. These clubs have also been designed to give it a higher launch angle and a flat face which gives the golf ball a higher spin and helps it stop faster with more precision, combining the advantages of an iron with the more forgiving nature of a wood.
Hybrid menjadi pilihan karena dua perkara. Pertama, makin banyak pegolf yang enggan belajar memukul dengan iron 4 (low trajectory) dan fairway woods (shaft lebih panjang menyulitkan para 'beginners'). Kedua, dari dalam rough tebal, hybrid relatif lebih mudah karena shaft lebih pendek dan bola bisa dipukul 'hit down' seperti menggunakan iron, sementara fairway woods harus dipukul dengan gaya menyapu (skim over instead of cutting into the grass).
Berikut hasil survey Darrell Company yang bikin gue juga jadi pengen beli hybrid. Tahun 2007, 30% pegolf telah menggunakannya (minimal 1 biji), naik dari hanya 7% di tahun 2004. Yang lebih mengagetkan, 65% pegolf pro PGA Tour dan 80% di Champions Tour (ajang para senior) telah berpaling ke hybrid.
