QuickTime has always been my favourite video player. After installing Sonoma, it does not work anymore. Every time I open a video with it, the Mac is stuck and there is no way to unblock it, it is simply impossible to close the app.
Open QuickTime go to quicktime menu, select service settings, mine did not have ticks only little blue lines so I selected - restore defaults button and now all is okay no more crashing or quicktime problems.
Yes I updated to Sonoma and QuickTime icon goes to the bottom of the screen but it won't open up on the screen to play anything. But I have downloaded Final Video Player app from the App Store it has a free version but it took ages to read the dvd in my portable dvd player for computers.
I cannot hide the quicktime player panel in Sonoma operating system. Is there anyone else having the same problem? After selecting fade panel after inactivity in system settings, it still does not hide the panel. Thank you.
Both QuickTime Player and Apple TV are Apple products. You would think that Apple in developing updates in OS would have compatibility with these products. Is there no solution from Apple experts? My equipment is MacBook Air M1 2020 - 16 GB Memory. I have also had a problem with Apple Mail freezing since I updated to Sonoma. The issue with Apple Mail happens in two scenarios - an email with a large attachment or an email with hundreds of BCC email recipients. The email is stuck in Outbox and the program will not open without freezing immediately. I'm sharing this email issue in this thread about video players with this question. Could the freezing issue be due to a memory issue (though I have 16 MB)?
I'm having a different but probably related problem. When I try to play a video with Quicktime, the computer doesn't freeze, Quicktime doesn't hang, but instead QT treats the mpeg file like an audio file and plays only sound, with a bit of popping and hissing mixed in. The issue recurred with every file I tried. QT Version 10.5 (1170.4.13.1). Sonoma 14.1.1 (23B81). MacBookPro18,3.
I am using an LG screen mirrored, supplied by Apple with my 16inch M1 Max connected via the original USB-C cable supplied with the monitor. I cannot be the only editor in the world using this screen in this mode. APPLE need to sort this one quick time.
This issues happens with me when I try screen capture. I press record. Nothing happens no control bar. Try to save No options Only way out is to Quit- no recording major workflow problem for teacher using QuickTime to teach !!!
My default Quicktime Player that comes with OS X 10.9.5 stopped working. When trying to open, I get a "Problem Report QuickTime Player" with options "OK" and "Reopen". Neither option works. Needless to say I can not play any videos. This is NOT due to upgrades, it was working but overtime it started developing problems. I think it just got damaged or corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. This is on a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.9.5. This Quicktime ver (10.3 I think) came with the OS.
Is the problem local (shows up in only user account) or global (shows up under all user accounts)? If local, then the problem may only be a corrupted PLIST file for QT X in that account's "Preferences" folder. If global, then the problem may be corruption in the app itself, the operating system or some sort of software conflict. In most cases a global problem is more easily fixed by re-installing the entire system than by trying to diagnose, isolate, and fix a specific problem. Another possible solution (if you have a spare external drive), would be to create a pristine, secondary start-up system and use it to troubleshoot the original system problem which can be a lengthy, time-consuming proposition.
As stated, I deleted each file individual, one at a time and rebooted the computer after each delete. I was expecting the OS to rebuild these files by itself but I could NOT find these said files anywhere again. Maybe I did something wrong? I put back the files from the trash bin to original location for now.
Finally a new detail that I may have omitted. The Quicktime application does launch by itself. It is when I try to open a known working .mp4 file in it, it is then when it crashes. If I double click on a .mp4 file, well... the it crashes right away.
1) I believe the file you want to delete is "com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist" located in the "Library > Preferences" folder for the account under which the QT X player crashes. (I.e., each user account should have its own PLIST file for the QT X player app so make sure you didn't delete the one for the working user account.)
I logged in as my Test account (where QT does work). Used /Users/Test/Library/Preferences and it took me to the QT files. This is the same location as on the Admin account. I know this because like in Admin, the Test account had the same QT files I deleted yesterday from Admin. (in previous post)
Based on the file structure on the Test account, I do think I'm in the right place in the Admin account. If I'm not, I don't know what I can do in Admin to make sure I'm in the right place. Also, you wrote "com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist", but the closest file I can find to that is com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.LSSharedFileList.plist. Not apples to apples. I also tried to show hidden files to see if there was something closer to that file name but there was not.
You may be correct here. I erased a spare external drive and installed a clean version of the latest Mac OS X system and "com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.LSSharedFileList.plist" was the only QTX name that popped up. (I.e., it appears the name I suggested was a carryover from an earlier OS version.) Also learned the following....
1) To force the system to generate a new copy of the "com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.LSSharedFileList.plist" file I had to open the QT X player app and load a media file for playback. (I.e., merely rebooting the system does not regenerate this PLIST file nor does merely opening the app as it used to do under older operating systems.) On my system I either "drop load" a file to the QT X Player icon or open the app and select a file for playback.
3) Structure of "Shared" PLIST file is different from the QT X Player PLIST file I references. Believe this change was the result of combining the old player PLIST file and individual PLIST files that used to be created for each individual media file played. (I.e., the "Shared" PLIST file stores bookmarks, custom property info, and names of the most recent filles played. For example:
4) Am guessing, but cannot confirm, that if this file becomes corrupted or the references become orphaned, then that might explain why the QT X player might crash. (I.e., am hoping that the process of regenerating this file might might filter out any bad/corrupted references during the "validation" process previously mentioned above but cannot really test this on my system since I'm not experiencing any crashes on which to test my theory.)
5) Suggest you try removing the PLIST file as you did before, open the player app, and then try to load a video for playback. Let us know if this generates an new PLIST file and whether or not the video file now plays without crashing the QT X player app.
