The conference is predicated on the assumption that the overall “health” of
communities and individuals varies considerably according to socio-economic
factors and the provision of resources by government and local authorities.
The conference will also explore the ways in which public services can be
integrated with and aligned to existing community assets in programmes of
positive action and resource sharing within "participatory democracies".
By addressing these issues the Trust wishes to expand its own understanding of
these complex issues and provide a platform for further discussion and action around regeneration. It will publish the conference proceedings and hold monthly Centenary
Seminars from September until December 2014 drawing on conference discussions.
The key questions underpinning the conference are;
- What forces and factors act as barriers to community/individual ill health and what might be done to overcome them?
- What is the role of regeneration in challenging ill health? Does it work?
- How can community members and third sector groups be helped to take part in effective and fair participatory decision-making processes with local authority and government?
- How, why and in what ways can and/or should a communities resist and challenge local authority decisions in the provision of health-giving facilities?
The Conference will be of interest to academics (including students and researchers), medical practitioners, community health specialists, social sciences – power, resistance, politics and empowerment, local authority and government officers including regeneration specialists, political and community activists, politicians,Trust Friends, members and supporters, third sector workers and of course community members!
Held in the grand main Edwardian pool as above (with seats!), the conference will provide a unique environment to explore these matters. Lunch will be provided by the Trust's "Govanhill Grub" Volunteers.
The conference acts also as a fund raiser for the Trust and the development of the Wellbeing Centre.
