We will distribute the latest edition of our School and Community Gardening Resource Guide as well as a short survey which will help guide our efforts for the coming growing season. ITHACA CHILDREN'S GARDEN & ANARCHY ZONE
Wednesday, January 22, 6:00-8:00pm

at CCE-Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca 14850
Ithaca Children’s Garden and Anarchy Zone Staff will discuss recent developments and exciting upcoming projects, with Rusty Keeler and Erin Marteal.  Over the past 20 years, Rusty Keeler has worked with hundreds of communities, schools, parks, universities, and childcare centers to dream, design, and construct beautiful outdoor environments for children in more than 30 states and throughout Canada, Europe, China, Australia, and New Zealand. Keeler is one of the pioneers in the new movement to reconnect children to nature and his designs reflect his sincere desire to create a more beautiful world in which to grow and explore. Keeler is the author of the book, Natural Playscapes: Creating Outdoor Play Environments for the Soul (Exchange Press: 2008) and is a frequent keynote speaker and presenter at conferences, communities, and colleges worldwide. His favorite current project is the Hands-on-Nature ANARCHY ZONE at The Ithaca Children's Garden.  Erin Marteal grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, and moved to the Ithaca area 13 years ago, where she and her husband relocated in pursuit of quality of life.  Erin has been involved with various garden-based learning efforts for children and adults in the local community and statewide for the last 12 years, including leading numerous living classroom projects and garden outreach programs in Ithaca schools.  In 2009 she interned with the Durban Botanic Gardens in South Africa, where she assisted with the development of permaculture education programs.  In August of 2010, she completed her Master’s degree in Public Garden Leadership with Cornell's Department of Horticulture. She has served as ICG’s Executive Director since May, 2011. Free and open to the public. Questions? SCHOOL GARDENS
Tuesday, March 4, 6:30-8:30pm
at CCE-Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca 14850
Learn about starting and sustaining a school garden from people who have lead the charge in the Ithaca City School District and learn how to integrate a school garden into Common Core Curriculum, with Wayne Gottlieb and Audrey Baker. Wayne Gottlieb has been teaching 7th grade science at DeWitt Middle school for the past 15 years.  He has been using gardens in the curriculum for 14 years.  The vegetable garden was built 5 years ago and has been an integral part of his science curriculum since them.  Wayne is not a farmer by training, but has learned much from the master gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension, parents, teachers, students and from his 5 years of failures and successes.   Wayne has presented his garden program to STANYS (Science Teacher Association of NY state) and NOFA (North Eastern Organic Gardening Association).  Audrey Baker is Program Director and co-founder of Wood's Earth, a new farm to school organization in the Ithaca Area. Audrey is also a Master's candidate in the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs, concentrating on institutional food system reform. Audrey is passionate about empowering kids and their families to understand and take control of their food choices. She has worked on various farms and in restaurants, started a few grassroots food and gardening education projects, and worked for Grow Pittsburgh's Edible Schoolyard where she managed two school gardens in the city. Audrey also works with imprisoned youth and adults on food issues.
