And rightly so, IF the cyclist was on Reed Hartmann Highway (operative word: highway!). Bicycles NOT ALLOWED on highways!! DOH!

Bicycles are not permitted on the Interstate system and other "limited access" highways (like Cross County).  Reed Hartman is not a limited access highway.

I wouldn't ride down Reed Hartman in morning work traffic, but I am pretty sure it is legal to do so.  The cyclist isn't "slowing down the traffic", the cyclist, as a legal vehicle on the road, IS the traffic.

From the article, it seems the truck driver, not the officer, was blaming the cyclist.

Good afternoon all,

I can't take this anymore, below is the text of the article. No where in the article is blame ascribed to anyone. The truck driver merely stated that he was "...watching the bicyclist...".

Now, one could infer that the "truck driver" was accepting blame for hitting the cop because he was "watching the bicyclist".

No point in letting this devolve into the usual "right to the road" BS.

Chill

BLUE ASH — A motorcycle officer suffered minor injuries in a crash on Reed Hartman Highway between Cooper and Hunt roads early today.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was turning to talk to a bicyclist slowing down the morning traffic when a truck traveling at a low speed struck him about 9 a.m., police said.

The truck driver has told police he was watching the bicyclist and did not see the officer, who was taken to Bethesda North Hospital.

He is expected to recover.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Dear Gritty, next time you DRIVE down RHH, observe the NO BICYCLES signage!

The reason I know this is simple - I was yelled at by an irate driver a couple of years ago, and noticed the clear signage AFTER yelling back at him. DOH!

Unless you're prepared to research things properly, it would be a good idea to not post misinformation on the board! :P tongue

Back on June 28, 2010 Jon Ruedisuelli commented on this stretch of
road on the Cincinnati Cycle Club's forum:

"On a side note, I recently noticed that the "no pedestrians,
bicycles, or mopeds" signs on Plainfield road between Hunt and Reed
Hartman have been taken down. There are still signs at several
intersections on Reed Hartman (which is somewhat like a limited access
highway), but clearly somebody in Blue Ash got the message that this
25mph stretch of Plainfield Road with multiple driveway access points
is NOT a limited access design. Good news for anyone who bikes to
Raymond Walters. I used to ride this stretch "illegally" about twice
a week when I had classes there."

I keep seeing this guy's name "Reed Hartman", and I'm thinking why
can't we ride our bikes on this road that's named after this guy?
I mean who is this guy anyways??
Well, I did some superficial research, since that's all I'm capable
of, and found this :

Scores of Chief Executive Officers of Cincinnati's leading
corporations, men whose names would 'start a spirit' in nations'
capitals the world over, have had important impact on the shaping of
the City over the past four decades. Yet the name of only one modern
business man is borne by a principal street or thoroughfare. And he a
quiet, low-key vice-president of sales, much of whose service was
rendered after retirement.

Reed Hartman Highway slices down through Cincinnati's suburban
city of Blue Ash from the northern border of Hamilton County as we
know.

His name is not prominent in Blue Ash. The local library has no
file on him; ask a local resident, and the chances are he or she would
not know who he was. Why, then, the Reed Hartman Highway?

It's a long story, but when Mr. Hartman was asked at the opening of
his "highway" if he'd wish for any restrictions or prohibitive aspects
as far as speed-limits or obstacles as in fire-hydrants etc., he
quickly asserted.....
" Just don't let any of those G#%D^%# cyclist on my F&%*# road!" .

Except that is not the same stretch of road, if the article is correct describing the accident as occurring between Cooper and Hunt Roads - which would be on RHH - not Plainfield Rd (which is not designated a highway..)....

Close, but no cigar!

I live right around the corner from this spot.

The 4 lane road north of Hunt IS Plainfield until it turns left at the
traffic light, where the four lane becomes RHH. Astute studying of the
photo of the motorcycle under the truck shows a fence in the
background which is north of where Plainfield turns left and the road
becomes RHH. So the accident did occur on RHH.

I still need to check the signage for that section of the road to see
if cyclists are permitted there, but I'm pretty sure they are not. I
will try and report back soon.

While we're in Blue Ash let me pass this on from the most recent "Blue
Ash E-Blast" newsletter:
SQUIRREL HOUSE VOTING
Let the judging begin!!! We are having a squirrel house decorating
contest and we'd like YOU to vote! Voting will take place the week of
April 16th at the Recreation Center.

A "street", a "road" and a "highway" are the same thing.  Don't put too much weight on the name of Reed Hartman Highway, it just as easily could have been called Reed Hartman Street.

Clarification for anyone who cares; the 'inference of hypocrisy' Paul makes here is only partially correct. I do indeed ride towards traffic on Glendale Milford road, but not on the road, rather several feet over the white line, hugging the crash barrier. The very fact I have had many close encounters with death even that far off the road is all the justification I need to ride that direction, rather than with my back to the lunatics. So if that makes me a hypocrite then OK, but rather that than dead, which I would likely be if on the other side - even right of that white line.

I'm done with this post now, my prime intention was trying to keep my fellow riders safe, but I also know I can come off too forcefully. Sorry if I offended anyone!

Cheers, Mr C.

scapegoat than a .....cyclist.

Sorry to open this up again...but funny coincidence is the "cyclists"
was the new intern in my company...he's from China. In China they
don't have a lot of road rules. People walk/bike ride mules right down
major highways. Its crazy I know but I think he was more nervous than
anything and probably had no idea that its illegal.
He actually takes a shuttle from UC's campus and then bikes the rest
of the way.

All of this just highlights the fact that blue ash/sharonville is not
setup for anything other than cars...which sucks. So if anyone wants
to do something about it then get a hold of me and lets grab a beer
and research what steps we can take to make a change....otherwise
we're all just full of hot air.

It's the cops fault. You make a u-turn in front of morning traffic
that's your fault, its dangerous. Secondly don't the cops have
anything better to do than make a big bold, showing off maneuver to
pull over a cyclist. Serves him right.
Ok, off my soapbox!
