Dear friends,

Here we have an EVS vacancy in Tallin, Estonia
Duration: 9 months, from September 2015 - May 2016
Details:Kindergarten for 1-6 years old children.

----------------------

Kiikhobu

The name of our kindergarten is Kiikhobu, which means a rocking horse. There are 12 groups and about 260 children. In every group we have 20-24 children. The children are from age 1 to 7. There are 2 kindergarten teachers in every group and an assistant for the teacher who is tidying the room, cleaning the tables, helping the children to get dressed, making the beds etc. We also have 2 music teachers and a physical education teacher. Furthermore, there is also nurse and a speech therapist. The kitchen staff is providing food 3 times a day. There is also some help personnel: e.g. gardener, repairman and laundry woman. The management of the kindergarten is composed of three people.

Planned curricula activities take place in the mornings. Children learn the maths, Estonian, observe and explore different things, listen stories and fairytales. We also draw, sing and do physical exercises. Before lunch we spend an hour or a bit more outdoors. We have a very big playground where there are growing a lot of trees (like apple trees, cherry trees, fir-trees, birchen) and bushes. There are also a lot of toys, playing things and swing sets for the children. Sometimes we are going to a forest to play or visit different interesting places like museums, theatres etc. We celebrate also holidays together like Christmas, Eastern, fathers´ day, mothers´ day and different national holidays. We also have parties with parents.

Firstly we would like to share the good experience of our work as a childhood education institution and give young people the possibility to work in a place which supports the family and the individual development of children. We would like to share the experience of our culture and society.
European Voluntary Service programme gives an opportunity for including young people with different background into our work. Therefore there is an even bigger diversity of people and influences to share, especially important for the children in our kindergarten.
Kindergarten Kiikhobu does have experience in EVS: in the last three years we hosted five long-term volunteer (every project lasted 5-9 months) and many (19) short-term volunteer. Also we have long term cooperation with Tallinn University in training the students to be teachers in base education institutions through practise placements.

*Our kindergarten is situated in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Tallinn lies in the north of Estonia, at the seaside at the gulf of Finland. The kindergarten is in Mustamäe, which is one of the biggest and greenest living areas in Tallinn. The buildings are mostly high appartments buildings from the sixties and there are several parks and fields, even a little forest is not too far from it. We are lucky to have a large and very green area as a territory for our kindergarten, where every group has it´s own play area. It is good for outdoor activities and the nature education for the children.

There are 12 groups in the kindergarten, in which two are day nurseries (children aged 1,5 till 2 years) and two mixed groups (children from 3 till 7, who are also often children from the same family).
Working and main language of communication is Estonian. There are also children from Russian speaking families in our kindergarten, but they are learning and speaking Estonian in our kindergarten, so they could continue to Estonian speaking schools.

The aim of the kindergarten is to assure the harmonious development of children, which would give them a study base for further studies and in everyday life. In addition we have a possibility to learn English, art and sport activities in several hobby groups (boy’s sports group, girl’s dance group and gymnastics). The colleagues are with good and positive attitude. Smoking is forbidden in the territory of the kindergarten.

Estonia is a democratic parliamentary republic and is divided into fifteen counties. Estonia regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The capital and largest city is Tallinn. With a population of only 1.3 million, it is one of the least-populous members of the European Union.
Estonia lies in the northern part of the temperate climate zone and in the transition zone between maritime and continental climate. Because Estonia is continuously warmed by the Gulf Stream it has a milder climate despite its northern latitude. Estonia's sparse population and large areas of forest have allowed stocks of European Lynx, Wild Boar, Brown Bears, and moose to survive, among other animals

*We can offer the volunteer an interesting and diverse learning and working environment. The role of the volunteer would be to be a support person for the teachers, while using her cultural background and traditions, previous experience and motivation to influence the everyday life of the kindergarten. S/he can introduce her culture and ideas to the teachers and the children while working with the staff. At the same time the volunteer will have the opportunity to get to know Estonian culture though her work and interaction with the children.

Our kindergarten has a great respect for the Estonian old folk culture and traditions. The work is in many ways based on the yearly life cycle of our folklore. We celebrate the traditional days in the old calendar and like to teach the children how knowledge and skills are passed forward throughout generations. As a teachers help and support the volunteer would assist the teacher in the preparation and implementation of the lessons. Volunteer will be helping children in a group, but also individually. S/he would take part in all the activities of the group: lessons, trips, games, music, art and sport classes etc. There is always room for the initiative of the volunteer to find her/his own project within the kindergarten.

The volunteers can have meals in the kindergarten. In free hours he/she can use the internet in the kindergarten.

As a starting period the first weeks of the volunteer would be as follows

However, some previous experience with children would be useful. Volunteer shoud be friendly, open-minded, sociable, cheerful, empathic and with a capacity of self-examination. A volunteer is in good health and not suffering from infetious diseases such as tuberculosis, etc. Basic health check is needed from the local estonian house doctor.
