given that last JRuby versions can import C extensions, do you think that it might be possible to use fxruby with JRuby? If so, could you give me some basic advice on how to try that?

In theory, it should work. There is nothing in FXRuby that requires the MRI.

I gave JRuby+FXRuby a try half a year ago, but couldn't get it working. The JRuby C-ext implementation missed several functions, which were not easy to work around. If I remember correctly, I got it compiled after some tweaking, but it eventually failed to start. The situation might be much better, now, if the C-ext implementation is more mature.

At the same time, I tried Rubinius+FXRuby, which worked, but wasn't fully stable. The program crashed after some usage, but I did no serious investigation about the reason.
