Special Issue on Evolutionary Computation for Software Engineering
hosted at Advances in Software Engineering

Call for Papers

Under the broad umbrella of evolutionary computation (EC) are
algorithms that try to mimic biological mechanisms of evolution (e.g.,
genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming,
genetic programming, memetic algorithms, and swarm intelligence
algorithms). These types of algorithms have been used successfully for
planning, design, simulation and identification, controlling,
classification, and solving many other combinatorial optimization
problems. Recently, evolutionary algorithms have been applied to many
areas of software engineering including, requirements, design,
implementation, testing, and maintenance. Some prominent examples are
mutation testing, genetic programming for bug fixing and effort
estimation, various predictive models obtained by evolutionary means.

As software engineering is very dynamic, automated, adaptive, optimal,
and/or large scale, other computer science disciplines can contribute.
Evolutionary computations are one of them that may improve on software
engineering practice and experience. This special issue will be
devoted to the latest innovative EC as applied to the software
engineering domain. Papers dealing with empirical evaluation of EC
techniques in an industry setting will be especially welcome, and we
would, in particular, promote papers that describe the use of EC in
software engineering where it has previously not been applied.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

EC techniques for requirement engineering and design
EC techniques for testing and quality assurance
EC techniques for software metrics
EC techniques for cost analysis and risk assessment in software
projects
EC techniques for optimization, transformation, and configuration
management
EC techniques for business process management and business rules
EC techniques for reverse engineering and program understanding
EC techniques for knowledge acquisition and representation
Theoretical work on EC (with an explicit aim to simplify the
introduction of EC in industry)
Research on EC applications
Empirical studies (not necessarily performed explicitly in
collaboration with industry)
Reports on industrial experience
