Can't find master node

Sorry for all the noob questions, but I can't seem to get any frontend
nodes to see my master node:
Master node 'master@xxx' not available. Retrying in 5 seconds.
the address is externally addressable... Are there a bunch of ports I
need to open, or anything like that?
Note: I'm trying to get all these nodes running on one machine.
