calving patterns and AMS

This is in response to David's question about the number of cows that can be milked in 2 robots.  He has mentioned  a split calving herd.  I suggest that one thing  to think about is calving pattern.  If one is looking to use the robots to their fullest potential perhaps one needs to think about having as flat a milk production curve as possible.  I would imagine this would require a year around calving model.    I am aware that there are many factors that go into the decision on calving patterns on farm.  I do think it is important to not over look the seasonal milk flow when thinking about the number of units required.  This is true for conventional systems as well.
