There was discussion at a lunch meeting some months back, and the
general consensus was that having a web site was a Good Thing. But it
has always proved hard to find a web master willing to maintain it,
partly because of what was the somewhat cumbersome method of updating
the site. I therefore undertook to investigate simpler methods, and
created a new web site (TheAmherstClub.org) which is considerably
easier to update. Anyone with the password can update it (pasting text
in using a web browser), so it is possible to have various people
responsible for updating different pages.

So far, nobody has come forward with offers to help out. I have added
a few documents (Policy Manual, Bylaws, etc) in addition to what was
on the old web site. But I don't wish to be the only one who maintains
the site (in addition to treasurer duties). Some entries rarely need
updating (e.g. board of directors, policy manual). Others ought to be
updated regularly if we wish to maintain a "current" web site (e.g.
luncheon notes, upcoming speakers).

So, should we continue to have a web site? If so, how should it be
updated?

We have a solid core of members who volunteer for almost everything and can be seen or heard by all as they perform their varied functions.  Then we have some who are "too busy" to take on active positions such as an officer or directorship, a committee membership, etc.  Then maybe there are some who are either somewhat shy or who prefer to work as individuals instead as part of a group.  There's nothing wrong with that, and one of those folks would perform a valuable service by offering to become Webmaster (or Webmistress or maybe Webperson?) because the job can be done at home on one's own schedule.  Someone reading this who would like to "do something" for the Club but hasn't yet found the right niche, and who is somewhat computer literate, should be in touch with Roger to find out more about the job.  It could be both fun and rewarding.     --- Hub

I seem to remember that at a luncheon meeting a show of hands
indicated that the members were greatly in favor of having a web site.
However, I believe that an out of date web site is much worse than not
having one. If the site is our public face, then it needs to show us
at our best. A suggestion was made that we could pay someone to
maintain it, but I think that would be a terrible waste of money.
While I am all for paying for specific skills that we cannot find
among our members, this case does not fall into that category. With a
minimum of help, anyone who is able to use their computer to send
email or write a letter could do what is necessary to add to the
calendar of speakers or update the luncheon notes.
As not all the members read these messages, perhaps we should bring
up the subject again at one of our luncheons.
