Switching to WordPress MultiSite?

Switching to WPMS will in the initial stages mean that some features
available on DearDiary are no longer available. Some of the things
that would alter would be;

* Major interface change. The WP interface is quite different to DD.
* Friends Only Diaries would not initially be possible.
* Private Diaries, not initially possible.
* Far far fewer customization abilities initially.

That's the ones I can think of straight away. There are some
significant plusses though;

* Server requirements significantly reduced, reducing overheads
* Threaded comments, replies to comments better handled
* Can use any WordPress theme (subject to the theme being installed by
Administrators)
* Multiple authors per diary
* Multiple levels of administration per diary
* Thousands of plugins already available, meaning enhancements more a
case of integration than coding
* Integration with Facebook, Twitter, etc already done by way of
plugins
* Much, much better SEO
* More likely to get updates, since small stuff can be done while I'm
at Uni, big rewrite - not gonna happen!

Do you have a timeline in mind for the switch to Word Press??

At this point I don't. I have decided that Friends Only diaries and Private Diaries are a must before switching. I've nearly finished the Friends Only side, and I've got the 'old' diary redirection working so we can migrate only those people that want to go to the new system (which means I can move to WPMS a bit earlier in reality, and then work on getting things in place that people who want to migrate but not until I get X feature in place).

The idea of 'old' deardiary requires that I tweak the new user signup system because I don't want people to sign up on the new system with a username that's used on the old system.

Of course I also need to get a migration process in place otherwise no-one could move anyway :-)
