Hi Kathleen – Last week, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen misled the country when she discussed the Trump's Administration's cruel practice of separating young immigrant children from their parents. Speaking at a congressional hearing, Nielsen said: "The standard ... is to keep that family together as long as operationally possible. When we separate, we separate because the law tells us to, and that is in the interest of the child." But when ICE agents ripped away the daughter of "Ms. L," a Congolese asylum seeker, it was decidedly not in the best interest of her seven-year-old child, who frantically screamed as they took her from her mother. Nielsen claims immigration authorities separate families when they can't confirm a parent-child relationship. If that were the real reason, then why did they make no effort to determine our client's mother-daughter relationship for months? Instead, they only provided a DNA test after we filed a lawsuit on Ms. L's behalf. After four torturous months of separation, the DNA test, of course, confirmed Ms. L is the child's mother. Sign this petition telling Secretary Nielsen to stop this cruel and unnecessary practice of separating children from their parents. Nielsen denies that separating children from their parents is a Trump administration policy. But whether or not it's a written rule, the practice is widespread. We've heard of at least 429 cases in which children have been separated from their parents – and those are only the ones we know about. Some of these children are only two years old. Add your name to this petition so the Trump administration knows we won't stand for this inhumane practice. The silver lining is that we've already seen how much impact our voices can make. In the face of intense public pressure from the ACLU and supporters like you, ICE released Ms. L so she could reunite with her daughter. That tells us that they will bend if we keep the heat on. There are so many more cases like Ms. L's that the Trump administration doesn't want us to find out about. Take action now so we can bring the truth to light.
