We have a real chance to help end the military draft system in America!

Join us in Denver Thursday, April 19 to testify at the 'open-mic' hearing of the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service and protest the continuation of compulsory draft registration and the Selective Service System.

Where: Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Schlessman Lobby, Entrance 5 (Evening Entrance), 2001 Colorado Blvd., Denver, CO

When: 3-5 pm (doors open at 2:30 pm)

Sponsored by: War Resisters League; Contacts: Edward Hasbrouck (415-824-0214); Matt Nicodemus (720-979-9967)

Details: The National Commission on Military, National, and Public  Service is holding a total of nine public hearings throughout the country.  They are considering and will be reporting to Congress on a number of important questions, including:

Should there continue to be a requirement for males to register for the draft?

Should there continue to be a Selective Service System?  If so, what should be its responsibilities and activities?

Should women be required to register for the draft?

To meet its defense goals, should the U.S.military be prepared to draft people not only for soldiering on the ground but also for medical and information technology work?

Can the U.S. government actually enforce and carry out its draft laws and programs?

This hearing in Denver will be the commission's second.  Those wishing to express their opinions to the commission will be able to do so by making a two-minute-maximum spoken statement and/or through submitting written testimony (see second link below).  Edward Hasbrouck of Resisters.info says, "Despite some problems, this is by far your best and most open opportunity in decades to tell the Federal government to end draft registration."

Help needed: We have urgent need of assistance this coming week before the hearing, including to publicize the event to peace and social justice activists, invite news media to a pre-hearing news conference, prepare handouts, create anti-draft placards and banners, and coordinate a demonstration outside the Museum.  Call Matt Nicodemus (720-979-9967) ASAP to volunteer.  Thank you!
