In the midst of the election and the high-profile political wrangling, there’s a quiet and large effort across the country to welcome newcomers to the US. Violence, persecution, insecurity and climate change drive the largest migration in humanity’s history.
The globe over, people are seeking safety from war, conflict, persecution and hunger. In Colorado, we've received a call to share in the welcome. Will you join us? We invite you, your group or faith community to support the short-term shelter, mid-term sheltering through hotels and short-term rentals, and hosts or spaces for up to 6 months.
Our partners at the border have been sheltering and welcoming people released by border patrol or who’ve made their way to safety for decades. From Del Rio to El Paso, Alburquerque to Phoenix faith communities and neighborhoods have found a way to give people respite, rest and resettlement.
Now they ask us to extend that network, to live up to our values and give folks the best chance possible to integrate into their new country – whether that’s in Silverthorne, Loveland, the Metro area or Fort Morgan.
Some folks we will connect on to their loved ones. Some folks will be first generation with no connections in the US and maybe looking to try Colorado as their home. From Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. From China, Egypt, Turkey, Cameroon, Nigeria and Russia.
There’s a role for each of us. We know together we can greet new neighbors and friends and meet the moment.
Thanks to our networks, we're doing so already - accompanying dozens of people who've arrived recently to Colorado. AFSC is working with Casa de Paz, volunteers from the Colorado Hosting Asylum Network and a host site for short term shelter. Together we can share in the welcoming!
