I have a SSD drive with Windows XP SP3 32-bit edition. Now, in order to repair the boot sector or the master boot record (MBR), can I only use a Windows XP Recovery disc or will a Windows Vista or Windows 7 Recovery disc also work, even though the command syntax is different?

I tried to download another copy of Windows 7 from the Microsoft website with my product key (I did not have a recovery disc or USB) but got the following message back: "The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."

In the past, PCs would ship with a CD/DVD disc that included an image of the system. If the OS has problems someday, you could easily restore the OS to the factory settings. But nowadays, manufacturers start to simplify the way of restoring Windows. They just put an image of the system on a hidden partition of your main drive, so does a Windows recovery USB drive. In addition to letting you reinstall Windows, it includes several troubleshooting tools for emergency use, especially when your system won't boot.

Windows 10 recovery tool is used to create a Windows 10 recovery USB or CD/DVD disc. You should make a Windows 10 recovery drive before your PC dies. Both Microsoft and third-party software manufacturers provide reliable recovery tools. Here we picked up two of the best Windows recovery tools for you regarding the effectiveness and ease of use. One is the Windows 10 built-in tool and the other is EaseUS Todo Backup, a third-party backup and recovery software.

The only thing that matters with System Repair discs is whether they are 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit System Repair disc only works with 32-bit Windows 7 computers. Likewise, a 64-bit System Repair disc only works with 64-bit Windows 7 computers.

Having read some of the comments plus answers I understand that repair discs are not tied to an individual PC and can be used on another PC with the same O/S (as long as both are either 32-bit or 64-bit in the case of Windows 7). If I use the MSI PC repair disc to recover the Asus PC HDD how do the Asus drivers get installed? Also, as the Asus and MSI drivers must be different will this procedure actually work?

I did not created recovery disc immediately after i turned on the laptop for the first time Lenovo win7 sp1, two years ago. Laptop is still in good condition and not infected by virus. Is it possible create recovery disc now?

Create a bootable USB drive or DVD disc in a few easy steps for immediate assistance. Elcomsoft System Recovery comes with 32-bit and 64-bit UEFI and legacy BIOS configurations, allowing you to create bootable media for all types of systems.

In literal terms, a Windows recovery disk is a bootable disc containing advanced recovery options, such as System Restore, Startup Repair, Safe Mode and Command Prompt, with which you can fix system errors and even reinstall Windows 10 or other OS from startup.

But since Windows 8, Windows has added a new feature to create Windows recovery USB. It is becoming a more mainstream approach in Windows 10/11 due to the portability. So nowadays, the "recovery disk" in the broad sense usually includes bootable USB as well. Of course, if you do not have any USB drive or simply do not want it, you can still use CD or DVD to create a system repair disc.

*You may find the Windows bootable USB is not working in some cases. For example, you cannot use a Windows 8 recovery disk to restore Windows 10, nor can you use a recovery drive made by Windows 10 64-bit to boot a 32-bit computer. That is to say, you cannot use a Windows 10 recovery USB created in this way on another computer.

After creating Windows 10/11 recovery USB, you may want to know how to use it. Then, I'll show you two common ways, namely, using Windows recovery drive or repair disc, and the third party rescue disk.

1. Insert your recovery drive or system repair disc. Then, press the displayed F key on the initial screen when you start computer, then change the recovery drive or disc as the first boot option in the BIOS and boot from it.

Only if you have a copy of the original Windows XP disc with the recovery console or if you happen to have another way of booting into a different OS where you can view and get access ot the files on the hard drive.

Professional and Enterprise Licenses: The specifications sheet for any given controller will denote the type of license it ships with. This is not something that can be changed upon shipping the controller. The end user is free to install their preferred version on the controller once it is in their possession.

Recovery Disc Replacement: Recovery discs are sent out for specific controllers and Windows operating systems at purchase. NI cannot replace recovery discs if the CD is misplaced or harmed. You will have to return the device via RMA for NI to reinstall the OS that it was shipped with. Alternatively, you can purchase recovery media from NI as long as it is for the same OS your controller was sold with. Lastly, you can purchase a new license from Microsoft. If you are prompted to re-activate your Windows OS with a Product Registration Key, please follow the instructions in Windows Product Registration key for My NI Controller.
Note: Recovery CDs are no longer sent out with Windows 10. All Windows 10 recovery information and images can be found online. Alternatively, you can purchase a Windows 10 IoT Enterprise USB Recovery Media For PXI (PN: 787269-03) from NI.

Upgrading OS via Generic USB Recovery Media: While It is possible to upgrade your controller using the Generic Windows Recovery Media provided by Microsoft, it is not recommended or supported by NI. Upgrading in this manner will use the Upgrade Install as the Default Installation method whereas NI recommends and supports only a clean Installation for upgrading its controllers.
