ATLANTA, April 1 (AF) -- Turner Network Television today announced plans for
an 8-hour miniseries based on the award-winning science fiction novel "The
Pride of Chanur."
"We're really excited about this project," said TNT spokesman Deal Treadmay.
"We've had a good deal of success with 'Babylon 5,' and 'Chanur' has much
the same flavor."
TNT began airing "Babylon 5" this year after the conclusion of its
syndication run and has backed a fifth season of the cult hit, as well as
several TV-movies. That series is set on a human-run space station far from
Earth, an interstellar United Nations which aims to keep the peace between
warring alien civilizations.
"The Pride of Chanur" takes place on an alien outpost where humans are
definitely in the minority, Treadmay says. "Humanity blunders onto this
trading post and upsets the delicate balance of power between several alien
races. We get into the minds of several types of alien characters, as they
seek to use humanity for their own benefit."
No cast has been set yet, but Treadmay indicated TNT is seeking a few
"well-known stars" for lead roles. "This is a character-driven story,
although it'll feature top-notch special effects, too."
Cutting-edge computer graphics will help keep production costs down, which
was a crucial part of the TNT deal. "We couldn't afford it without the
[computer graphics]," Treadmay said. "There's one scene with something like
300 of these lion-people and other aliens. It'd be impractical to film that
with conventional makeup and costumes, but using virtual sets and virtual
costumes, we can do it on a TV budget."
Principal photography is set to begin in October, for air in May, 1999. "The
Pride of Chanur" is based on the 1980 novel by C.J. Cherryh, which won the
Hugo award for excellence in science fiction. Mr. Cherryh could not be
reached for comment.

The sad thing about the joke is, we honestly wish they would do it...

Problem is that there _is_ a Mr. Cherryh.. but he decided to change the
spelling to Cherry to void conflict with his sister. :3

Like the announcement that PBS was going to buy out Time-Warner?

Actually, it'd be nice for someone to suggest it to TNT... after all,
they *are* feeling like Cameron right now over the Bab5 ratings...

You are correct there. The "h" was added to avoid confusion by book retailers.
They kept shelvin her stuff amongst the roamnce books. Cause there was another Cherry author writing romance.
She has a web page as well (C.J. that is ;) at www.cherryh.com
I found it cause the chanur series is actually my all-time favourite sci-fi sets. I really enjoyed the interaction between the different species.
Imagine if someone like the Mahen'do'sat were to find us and intro us to interstellar travel!
I also love the link between Tully and Hilfy.

It's the other way around... the family's name is "Cherry" and her agent
made her add the "h". (BTW, I get this story from both David (whom
I've known since about '82) and from Carolyn (known her for a looong
looooooooong time).)
