dev-util/pkgconfig is not light anymore. To build
pkgconfig itself, pkgconfig required, which is not good from a
development perspective. pkgconfig has several dependencies,
including
glib, which is a big package. Most recent glib version now requires
x11-misc/shared-mime-info, which is only needed for GNOME stuff, this
package
is pulled into stage3. Good it's not requires anything X related, but
things may change further. One of potential and very good *light*
replacement is dev-util/pkgconf, a drop-in-replacemnt written from
scratch. Details can be found here https://github.com/nenolod/pkgconf
Gentoo introduced a virtual/pkgconfig to have an alternatives for
pkg-conf. This is not a high priority replacement, only a test ideas.
Any
thoughts?
P.S. just finished a stage 3 build with above mentioned pkgconf.

I'm fine with switching. Never thought glib belonged in a stage3. Nice to see we can get rid of item

I think we can't easily get rid of glib, as udev depends on it and it's
extremely important ebuild. Main goal is not reducing the size and
removing "fat" packages but having better, lighter alternatives.

...and we've gotten rid of it. Pkgconf is now the default in Funtoo. See: http://jira.funtoo.org/browse/FL-15

Thanks to Oleg for taking this on.
