Hi Safety Captains,
My name is Caitlin Dunn. I am a THON 2012 Special Events Captain. This semester, I am enrolled in English 202D, and I am doing my final proposal on the canning rules and regulations. After meeting with Mairead, she said you would be an excellent source for my paper. I was wondering if I would be able to ask you questions via email in regards to your captain position, canning issues, and challenges. Thank you so much!
FTK,
Caitlin

Recommendation Overview:
For my resolution recommendation, I am suggesting that THON develops a
committee within Rules and Regulations or a fundraising THON captain committee
that will focus on researching and working with municipalities and stores in
developing and enforcing proper canning procedures. For example, students tend to run into the
streets when they are canning on street corners to get money from drivers in
the inside lanes. Canners have also canned on street corners or outside of
stores without receiving permission or permit.
Due to these issues, this committee will act as the liaison between
municipalities and THON canners. These
captains will be selected during the spring semester. Throughout the summer, they will be working
with states and municipalities where students can to develop rules and safety
and legal precautions. For example,
municipalities may suggest that if students are canning on the streets, they
must wear brightly colored safety vests or hold brightly colored signs. Once
the school year begins, these members will be paired up organizations that
fundraise and participate in THON. They
will work closely with these organizations to educate them on canning
procedures, the THON Rule Book, and consequences of their behavior through
attending organization meeting to present PowerPoints on the rules and
regulations. This will prepare all volunteers for SORAAC exam and better
oblige to rules. The SORAAC is an
assessment on the THON Rule Book. Currently, only THON chairs and
captains need to pass the exam to participate in fundraising events like
canning. However, in my resolution, every canner would be obligated to
take the SORAAC and pass it before canning. They would also have to sign
the exam promising that they would follow these rules even if it meant losing
out on a donation. In addition, they will verify canning locations and permits
prior to canning weekends and debrief with them after if there were any safety
or legal issues. In addition, this committee
will revise THON’s incentives to reward canners and their organizations for
safe and legal canning practices instead of primarily for fundraising
achievements because self-interest is a driver in fundraising and canning
behavior (Critcher, 2011). Overall, the
improved communication between THON, states and municipalities, and canners
will resolve this issue, and keep canners safe and out of legal trouble.
