King County built a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Redmond Ridge Drive NE and NE Alder Crest Drive. The new roundabout makes it easier for pedestrians, wheelchair users, bicycles, and people with strollers to use the intersection.
Continued growth of the Redmond Ridge community and nearby business park brings more vehicle traffic to this intersection in the coming years. Building the roundabout now helps to manage projected traffic increase, prevent speeding, and make the intersection safer for middle school students and people walking or rolling to and from the local park and athletic fields. This project provided the county with a rare opportunity to plan now for what the future will bring. Most of the design and construction costs were paid for with state traffic and pedestrian improvement grant money.
All vehicles may enter the intersection from all four entry and exit points of the roundabout. Drivers enter the roundabout by yielding to traffic that is already in the circle and drive in a counterclockwise direction until they reach their desired exit point.
The central island includes a truck apron, a raised section of red concrete that acts as an extra lane for large vehicles. The back wheels of the oversize vehicle can ride up on the truck apron so the truck can easily complete the turn.

State-funded FASTER traffic and roadway improvement project at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 115 in the Town of Penrose. The goal of the project is to improve safety and traffic flow to the eastbound US 50 on and off ramps and to CO 115 by adding a roundabout.
As part of long-range traffic planning efforts and in response to neighborhood petitions, congestion, and safety issues experienced along the corridor, the city performed a traffic study of Hillcrest Drive from Main Street to Niagara Road back in 2016. This study recommended the installation of roundabouts at the intersections of Miami, Sunnyside, and Niagara as both the near- and long-term solution to these issues.
The Niagara and Hillcrest intersection is currently controlled as a four-way stop. A recent traffic study for a nearby subdivision in 2021 indicated that the intersection was approaching capacity and would soon experience unacceptable levels of service during peak hours. In response to this, the city started on design of the roundabout in 2022 (incl. updated volume studies), completed necessary property acquisitions in 2023, and is now ready to construct the project.
Overview drawings of the Niagara/Hillcrest project depict the project footprint as well as the below-ground utility work planned for the intersection. This includes irrigation supply infrastructure, sanitary sewer reconstruction within the project area and down to Mesa Avenue, storm sewer (including stormwater treatment manholes and replacement of the 4-foot diameter line that experienced failure in the spring of 2023), water, communications lines, undergrounding of overhead power, the installation of new street lights, and power/water services to the roundabout center island to allow for landscaping that can be lit during the holidays (similar to others on Hillcrest).
Project construction started on December 12, 2023, and is scheduled to extend into June 2024. Similar to construction at the other Hillcrest roundabouts, this project will require full closure of the intersection. The primary detour route around the project is shown in the attached. The contractor will maintain detour signage to help motorists find the route and to discourage shortcutting through residential areas. Access to local residences and businesses immediately adjacent to the project area will be maintained throughout the project.
Starting Monday November 27, 2023, the eastbound 53rd Avenue traffic will be closed at the roundabout between the Medtronic driveway entrances for private utility construction. Business access will still be opened. All traffic entering from Central Avenue (Trunk Highway 65) will detoured westbound through 53rd Avenue to Washington Street. The closure is anticipated to be closed through December 1. For additional information, please see the official emailed notice (PDF).
This week, the Contractor completed construction of concrete curb & gutter along the south side of 53rd Avenue at Central Avenue (T.H. 65). Next week, the Contractor will resume excavation for the new roadway and begin construction of storm sewer along the corridor. For more information, please see the official emailed notice.
This week, the Contractor moved to the south side of 53rd Avenue and removed concrete curb and driveways near Central Avenue (TH 65) in the eastbound lane. The next phase of this project will include pouring of the new concrete curb and gutter on the south side of 53rd Avenue near Central Avenue. Following installation, the new concrete curb and gutter will require 7 days of curing time, during which vehicle access to driveways will be restricted for impacted properties. For additional information, please see the official emailed notice.
This project is the first phase of a larger project on East Cabrillo Boulevard between Los Patos Way and the Cabrillo Interchange. The second phase includes the replacement of the existing Union Pacific Railroad Bridge over Cabrillo Boulevard and pedestrian and bicycle improvements.
The Project is located along East Cabrillo Boulevard between Los Patos Way and the U.S. Highway 101 southbound ramps. It includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Cabrillo Boulevard and Los Patos Way and pedestrian and bicycle improvements. Construction of the roundabout (Phase 1) began in February 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2025.
The City of Santa Barbara has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments to manage the Project design and construction. The design was funded from the Highway Safety Improvement Program, State Transportation Improvement Program, Regional Surface Transportation Program, Measure D, Senate Bill 1, Local Partnership Program Formula, and Regional Surface Transportation Program. Construction is being funded with Highway 101 funds from the Regional Surface Transportation Program.
During closure hours, traffic will be maintained in both directions by a contraflow in the open lane. Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained through the work zone and will be accessible by temporary crosswalks. See below to view the traffic control plan and where the temporary crosswalks are located. This traffic control plan will be in place for approximately six months.
The roundabout along with additional improvements will include increased street lighting, and new bus shelters. During construction, bus stops will remain operational but relocated slightly from their original location. The Kahaluʻu Roundabout project is estimated to be completed by January 2025, weather permitting.
HDOT reminds motorists to allow for extra travel time and to drive with caution through the work zone. Special duty police officers will be on site to assist with directing traffic through the work zone. For more information on the Kahaluʻu Roundabout project, please call the project hotline at

The City seeks to promote, manage, and maintain a safe, efficient, and integrated multi-modal transportation system to support a healthy and vibrant community. This project aims to create an interconnected multimodal network, completing a link in the Bridge-to-Bridge trail between Manette Bridge and Evergreen Park, while also improving safety for all users.
North of this intersection, the existing corridor along 11th Street up to Pacific Avenue has limited pedestrian facilities. The existing sidewalks are discontinuous and in a state of disrepair, with obstructions reducing the available Pedestrian Access route (PAR) width and ADA accessibility. Bike users have to share the lane with vehicles as there are also no existing bike lanes within this section of roadway. In addition, sidewalk and street pavement on the local (lower) Washington Avenue will be reconstructed to improve paving, parking, and ADA accessibility to 11th Street Place.
With the roundabout, traffic capacity will be improved with a reduction in delays. The pavement will be reconstructed, and dedicated bike lanes will be added. Pedestrians will benefit from wider sidewalks and improvements to curb ramps. The project will include improved lighting for pedestrians and vehicles that use the corridor as well as waterline and storm drainage improvements. The project will greatly enhance safety and will have a profound impact on increasing pedestrian and bicycle activity.
