Wow what a full 24 hours!
Thanks to everyone who was present during Rafter's visit to Madison!
It was awesome for folks to show up despite the short notice and your
busy schedules. Hopefully each of you could take something useful
from it, as I feel I did, and Rafter expressed he did as well.
As a quick overview while it's still fresh:
We were able to tour sites on the isthmus, including the Faux-Op, the
Anthill Lab, Terra'ce beds, as well as the Lake Wingra filtration
sites. We perused photos of the work we've done over the last year
and a half on installations and workshops, discussing curricula and
perusing the mushroom teaching kit. The potluck was delicious and
overall enjoyable, with wild and cultivated goodies for all!
Unfortunately, due in large part to my poor facilitation, dinner did
not provide space for the intended conversations. Introductions and
check-ins at the beginning of sessions are a must, even seemingly
informal ones such as this, in order to stay on-topic and considerate
of the gathering's purpose. I will continue for some time to reflect
upon the content and manner in which we expressed ourselves.
("Learning!")
That said, there were many productive conversations before and after
dinner. I would like to check-in further with people about some of
the concerns, inspirations, suggestions, humor, and knowledge from
those dialogues. Rafter shared his experience with inter- and
intracommunity work, from permacultural/social justice lenses, which
will be helpful for more than just the scouting-trip to New Orleans!
He offered to host a Liberation Ecology Workshop over the winter if
folks here are interested, and in the meantime will forward prompts
from that workshop for us to consider as a group.
It's truly a gift to work with you all. I feel humbled and inspired
by the last day, and look forward to our reflection and action
together. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss any of
the topics that arose, or if you couldn't make it and would like a
more in-depth rundown. Anyone interested, or see this as valuable as
well?
Mycollaboratively yours,
Kelty
