while learning the basics of earthen
building?
Join Shelley and Anne—with their
combined six years of experience
studying natural building
internationally—as they come
together in Madison, WI, to
transform locally available soil, clay,
and straw into garden structures.
Workshop One: BUILDING AN EARTHEN GARDEN BENCH AND WALLS
Saturday, August 21st (9:30am–5pm) and Sunday, August 22nd (10am-2pm)
Learn: —What earth is and how to use it to build —Basic Strawbale
techniques
—How to identify a good earthen mix [and how to dance a jig to make
it!]
—How to incorporate recycled glass into earthen walls
—Wattle and Dab techniques —How to access and use locally available
materials
—Climatic considerations and variations in earthen structures
worldwide
$90 Workshop fee [or $45 plus six Dane County TimeBank hours] which
will include
water, snacks and juice for both days.

Workshop Two: FINISHING TECHNIQUES FOR OUTDOOR EARTHEN STRUCTURES
Saturday, August 28th (12:30-5pm)
Learn: —Basics of earth-based plasters, clay paints, and oil/wax
sealants
—How to incorporate sculptural elements within smooth surface finishes
—Maintenance techniques to ensure lifespan of earthen structures in WI
—How to use earthen paints indoors, as a non-toxic alternative to
interior paints
—Use of locally available materials (fiber, manure, pigments,
minerals, etc)
$40 Workshop fee [or $20 plus two Dane County TimeBank hours] which
will include
water, snacks, and juice.
Attendance will be limited for both Workshops, so register TODAY!
Registration will close Tuesday, Aug 17th.

entire process, from procuring
materials locally to protecting your
work for the long haul... For this
reason we encourage you to
participate in both workshops and
offer a discount for those who
choose to do so.
