my supervisor from last summer surprised me a few weeks ago with a fb message, something along the lines of "our new assistant account executive sucks. send me your resume ;)" so i was all stoked and kind of put jobs on the back burner. like finally! months of applying for things, not even getting interviews, and BAM looks like i have an opportunity with a place i <3 doing work i <3. but i found out yesterday they're only hiring at the ae level, not aae. now i'm back to square one. perfect timing for my parents to FLIP OUT on me last night when i told them so, leaving me a shaking, crying mess. which never happens.

all they do is ask how's it going??? are you applying for jobs??? have you heard back??? no shit i am, do you think i enjoy living at home? don't worry, i will tell you if any developments occur, stop bothering me about it because i don't feel like constantly bringing up my failures, thanks. i told them, sometimes it's just nice to get a pat on the back and hear "it's okay, it'll work out," even if it's a lie. CAN YOU DO/SAY THAT? JUST ONCE? -- they were like #nope.

so i'm back 110% on the job app grind now, and it is the worst. esp with puffy eyes and unsupportive parents. someone please shower me with exaggerated compliments, false praises, etc. because i'm dying to hear something positive after beating myself up for the past few months. a funemployment snaps cup, if you will.

GIRL I feel for you. My parents are  pretty supportive of my unconventional employment route (bakery job and other part-time stuff), but my other relatives and literally everyone else in the world is like, "oh you majored in international studies?? Let me tell you about all of these political/government options," not realizing that I mostly took lit and culture classes and I currently have no interest in the 9-5 office grind.

but I believe something will happen for you!! Do you have an alumni network that you can use to contact people in your desired field? Maybe ask your supervisor if he can put you in touch with other people who are hiring...

yeah! like i guess that their advice (totally unsolicited but w/e) comes from a good place? but like, we know what we want to do. just let us go about doing it. we are trying our best. a nod of approval wouldn't hurt now and then.

yesss, my supervisor is SUPER helpful. she ;) is forwarding my resume along to her friends in the industry, which is amazingly sweet of her. unfortunately, alumni from my business school are mostly accounting/finance types, but i just joined an online group and will track down those nyc boutique advertising types, i swear.

truth. my bff and her bf plan to go to thailand for a year to teach english! and i know people in the peace corps, teach for america, etc. admirable pursuits but not for me. :/ like it's more than just finding a job. i really want to do this stuff.

oh darling <33333 I know exactly how you feel, even living halfway around the world from my parents -- they keep demanding weekly updates, but I hiss and froth and keep repeating, basically, ffs I'll update you if there's something to update with!!!! I just get depressed by the prospect of having to answer an unending tirade of "How's it going? What's the progress?" when the answer is, almost without fail, "NOTHING :|".

but either way. ERICA, YOU ARE FABULOUS AND WONDERFUL AND SO FUCKING TALENTED, and super young still! You have lots of time to work it out and land a position you'll like. And the fact that your old supervisor hit you up is definitely a good sign and shows that people want your competence, even if they don't have the opening for you right now -- even if they can't help right now, maybe something else will open up in the near future, slash someone in their network will need someone of precisely your skills and talent and drive and moxie. And in the meantime, there's the jobhunt. And us, sharing the woes. And ice cream. I am a huge proponent of ice cream.

ERICA YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED PERSON.  And you are totally going to catch the break you deserve!  I totally empathize with parents being jerks about pestering to get a job too.  I sent out like six inquiries before I went to Canada, and my dad is asking me if I've heard back while I am on vacation.

Re: parents being overbearing jerks, I don't think it's out of bounds to ask (or tell) them to back off, especially if you are working your ass off trying to get something done.  Like, "hey, I know you mean well but you are stressing me the fuck out so could you tone it down please?"  I mean, a lot of you are right out of college and it's a really tough job market.  If you're putting in work and not getting any returns you can't be blamed.  And hell, I've been out of college for two years (and graduated two years later than I should have) and my dad only gives me the occasional "so are you thinking about getting a real job?"  I guess my situation is pretty different from most people's in a lot of ways, though.
