Julie: i have two referrals and a crapload of relevant experience
if i don't get an interview for this one, i am flinging myself into the lake :[
(by which i mean, putting the kibosh on publishing job apps for a while and cooling my heels in my internships)
Cassie: that sounds fair
but if you fling yourself into the lake, i am rowing myself out there
and grabbing your ass
Julie: HAHAHAHA omg ilu
i feel like it's a video game
and internships are the equivalent of grinding low-level monsters
until you level up
and can take on the boss
Cassie: LOL julie that's such an apt comparison
Julie: RIGHT???
i can't believe it didn't come to me before

HA, experience points. i love a good video game metaphor.

GUYS today is the LAST DAY of my internship!! my mom thinks i should ask if they are looking to hire / need part-time help since i'm going to be around. however i'm so awkward about that and what if they say "yeah sure just keep doin what your doin...including NOT getting paid!!!!" like how do i respectfully decline that offer?? my boss already said i could occasionally do guest posts for their blog but i am 100% OVER this whole "doing work and not getting paid for it" thing. bitches gotta eat! i always know i am in a bad financial situation when i am going up to the register at the grocery store with armfuls of ramen because they are 3 for 89cents.

CRIES, i hate this! have a great day everyone!

You know, you have nothing to lose, honeybun. I say that you phrase this assertively yet frankly. "Hello, X. I was wondering if you had any openings at Company YZ at this time that I could pursue. Although I would like to continue working here in the present capacity, I have to be pragmatic with my situation and pursue other opportunities that involve salaried compensation." You know, maybe say it NOT SO WOODEN, but you know what, Raina? You're worth it. You're smart as hell -- people don't just get into Middlebury for lulz, and they certainly don't graduate for lulz either -- and what if he says no/do shit for free? Then say, "Thank you for your time, but I'm afraid I can't do that. I appreciate your help and for this opportunity as it stood, however." You can do this. :)

Yeah, I would definitely definitely ask, since hiring on interns post-internship seems like pretty common practice; it's not an out-of-the-blue question at all. If they offer to extend the unpaid internship, I'd politely rebut with something like "Thanks so much for the offer -- I'd love to, but I'm looking for paid work at this time. But I really enjoyed working with you and if anything opens up further down the line, let me know!" idk, just something along those lines to keep communication open, reaffirm that you enjoyed yourself there, and would still love to work with them, but Shakespeare's got to get paid, son.

Would go with Julie's phrasing, tbh. SHE HAS INTERNSHIPERIENCE.

lulz no experience with this exact situation, though, since I bailed out of my Vancouver internships with "PEACE Y'ALL, I'M MOVING TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY, LOVE U THO".

If I end up doing my current internship for another 6 months or so, I'm going to be in the exact same nervewracked boat of asking re: employment opportunities. I know you've hired people so can I be one of them please??? love me!!!!!

ahh, last day, congrats! but also not congrats? you know what i mean. YES absolutely ask; both allison and julie have the right idea! definitely good to be assertive about how you're exclusively seeking a full-time, salaried position. okay, maybe not even full-time, i guess? but you gotta get that paper. don't be nervy about asking. YOU CAN DO IT, and you deserve it, and you have nothing to lose. i'm the same way :/ i just sent a follow-up email to my supervisor from last summer basc asking "have you guise passed around my updated resume yet, can you plz hire me, i swear i'll kiss your feet" and am sooo awkberg, ughhh.

after the experience with the illustration debacle, i'm going mercenary bbs. BE AWKBERG, CARPE DIEM! besides, i know far more awkberg people who have jobs, of all things, so w h a t e v e r. guess what, THIS IS TURNING INTO A CHEERLEADER FOR EMPLOYMENT LIFE, LADIES.

MORAL OF THIS STORY: SWAG IS SWAG REGARDLESS OF HOW SILLY IT IS. moral 2: let's get salaried positions at the ministry of silly walks???

All I can think about is the first episode of Girls.

Don't do what Lena Dunham did!  She got fired.

Or maybe do what Lena Dunham did and then later create a hit television series.
