The Obama campaign just called me about the Fall Organizing Fellowship!  Which sounds super fancy, but it's unpaid lmfao.  That's illegal, Mr. President.   I think they might be desperate, and saying that their "fellowships" are "competitive" is a good way to get equally desperate college grads to work for them for free, but it'll be good for that ever-valuable "work experience," at least.

So idk if I should take it because it would look good on my resume or if I should hold out for something where I will actually get money.  But I got something!

It goes from September 8 until l o l election day (November 6).  Since I will either be living with my mom or be put up with REALLY generous Obama supporters more southly in Virginia, I won't have a lot of costs.  But I AM waiting on a bunch of inquiries from positions that will actually pay me money, including NPR (which would please me like nothing else), and (and this is a SECRET) the DC office of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the organization Sarah works for.  But these are just inquiries, and this Obama thing is an offer.  And it WOULD look good on my resume, right?  I DON'T KNOW.

Hmmm. My very first reaction/thought/gut instinct is that if it were me, I'd go for it -- it's affordable + short enough that it won't keep you from jobhunting for too long (2 months fly by like nobody's business), it's some extra experience that'll look good on your resume, plus it sounds like the things you're applying for wouldn't mind (slash would appreciate) a democrat thing on your resume. And maaaaybe there'll be fewer fresh grads competing with you for jobs in November vs. September?

MY 2 CENTS, Julie says, as she types this from one of her two internships.

You can also let them know your position job wise and see if you could quit if a paying gig came up with no hard feelings.  Most people are reasonable so.

Also Lina got offered the same thing!

super-belated given the time thing, but omg i just crashed after the interview (might send an e-mail on this topic soon because i actually have a weird/fun topic to discuss with errybody about this particular part of the job hunt) and zzzzzzzzz'd. ANYWAY:  i vote to do what heather said, because i don't really have a lot of experience/wisdom and tbh you would be fighting the Goddamn Good Fight, sounds like, but the no $$$ is tough tits. another consideration: what about feeding yoself while you're doing this? i mean, sounds like you might have some limited housing options, which is decent for a ~2 month gig. if you're able to feed your mouth and they know about you being pragmatic about this, then i say get it.

ahh talk about a tough decision! you're right, it would look fantab on your resume, and it sounds like you're not too worried about $$$, esp since the commitment is a manageable length of time. def understand how this is an offer, not just an inquiry eeeeep i say why not go for it? consider it something to do while you continue searching for paid opportunities?

I like your idea a lot, Heather!  I will definitely look into it.

My rich grandma just gave me a pretty nice check while I was visiting her in Canada, so I think I'd be fine, food-wise.  But again, gotta get that cash money dolla dolla billz.

yeah, i mean, just 'cause you might be working for the prez doesn't mean that your loans will wait. i hear that. but i mean, if you're really keen, seriously have a talk with your family about the possibility and think of some fiscal go-arounds. to paraphrase a cliche/something i saw in lina's post, see if you have the will to make a way.

I mean they're going to know the economy is bad (because I get an email about once a day from their camp telling me they know the economy is bad)!  and you are your number 1 advocate, so don't be afraid to ask questions!  but on the flip side, IF a job doesn't pop up, this is going to look great - yeah I wasn't employed but I was doing SOMETHING.  and you can tell them you will definitely give them notice AND you could see if they would let you still do it on your off work hours too if you wanted - like say hey i got this paying job but I WOULD LOVE to still do this on the weekends!  so you wouldn't be just quitting.

i hope that is helpful.

They wanted an answer in 48 hours, and I was still conflicted after 48 hours, so I said no.

i don't know if i should feel concerned about the general state of obama, sorry for the general state of obama, or lol because lol. BUT HEY, I'M GLAD THEY'RE FLEXIBLE AND GOOD PEOPLE! that should bode well should something a little more fruitful than the fellowship come bubbling up through the pipes! ;)
