Stand Fast and Speak Plainly

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: ... Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
2 Thessalonians 2:13, 15
Speechwriter and commentator William Safire once told the story of a great example of a politician trying to take both sides of a controversial issue. He wrote, “Fuller Warren, Florida's governor in the '50s, was running for office in a year that counties were voting their local option on permitting the sale of liquor. Asked for his position on wet-versus-dry, he would say: 'If by whiskey you mean the water of life that cheers men's souls, that smooths out the tensions of the day, that gives gentle perspective to one's view of life, then put my name on the list of the fervent wets. But if by whiskey you mean the devil's brew that rends families, destroys careers and ruins one's ability to work, then count me in the ranks of the dries.'”
It is tempting to try to play both sides of a controversial topic. We think that we can somehow avoid offending anyone if we refuse to stake out a firm position and hold to it. In reality, that approach simply creates more problems. We need to say what we mean and mean what we say without trying to change our position to avoid conflict. In fact, in the example given above, Warren's second take, according to Proverbs 20:1 and 23:31–35, was the correct one. How much better it would have been if he had told the truth about how whiskey deceives people but then ultimately brings destruction.
We should not be unkind or harsh in dealing with others, but we should be firm, and everyone should know where we stand on issues that are addressed in Scripture. As Christians we are children of the God of truth who does not and cannot lie or change. While we will never be as perfect as He is, we should be committed to what is right and stand firm.
