Brother Art:

Greetings! I trust you are well, and have your Christmas tree in place. :-)
I looked at most every listing you sent, and I see some common threads weaving its way through the fabric, and it is bleak, and dark!
Most all the churches are "small... about 30" in attendance.
In many cases it appeared to be churches hoping somebody else would do the work (soul winning, discipling,) as they hope the church grows. Of course, there is not compensation, but as soon as the new man does what those attending will not do, there will be money to pay him. Hmmmm...really?
The prospects just do not look good. Unfortunately, we do not have very many men, and families who truly want to be used of God to build a church. Many have a burden, but few have been called, whereby they are dedicated, devoted, and diligent about the task.
I spoke with a wife recently who said her pastor husband is "lazy." He watched Atlanta Braves baseball (he at least could have picked a team that God may like, maybe the Yankees?) And he played games, but did not do the work of the ministry.
I know of a local independent, fundamental Baptist pastor who grew a church from 40 to 4 in 7 years. A woman I work with told me today that she asked him if he ever visits, and his response was "the people here do not like me." I know him personally, and from experience I can report his work ethic is poor, and weak at best. Apparently he loves work though, he can stand around all day watching others work! :-\  And he is real good at offering his opinion. :-X
I am not discouraged, I am realistic, and we are in trouble! I grew up in a day when the independent, fundamental, Bible believers turned America around, so I know it can be done, but, oh, God help us!

Look at the lights on the tree, smile, things will be better!

Brother Moore, I guess my Pastor is a rarity in today's world. All we ever hear is go out and win the lost and he has always set the example. There's nothing lazy about our Pastor or his wife. We are blessed!

I agree with Brother Moore. What some churches do not realize that there
are many other ways to tell people about the church than go door to door.
(By the way that is still the method that the Lord expects to do.) A
group of senior adults could take the phone book and divide it up and
call about 10 people each day. They can be given a script to use but
they need to make their own and it sounds geniune. They can give gospel
tracts and church flyers at the stores while they are shopping. One
church I know (larger church than my own) mailed letters to everyone in
the phone books. It comes down to what is the most important.

This is my two cents worth. Baseball has never been my problem. But for
football, they have not beat my team- CAROLINA PANTHERS.

Somebody is agreeing with Brother Don...sounds dangerous.

I was just thinking the other day that we need to stir things up on this list... Don is the man for that. ;-D

I do agree with both of these men, except that there are no little churches, just little pastors. So what is the problem do you think? Are all the people in all these churches lazy? If they are do you think the previous pastor is at fault for not teaching them better? If Fundamentalist churches are a mere shadow of their glory days which we all remember, how did this happen? I think this would be a good topic for the forum. What think ye? What is the best way to correct these conditions?

Of course God is a Yankee, He built His throne on the sides of the North.

You mean Don has a Christmas tree? I thought he was a Christian. Have you not read Jeremiah 10 Brother Don?

This book answers all your questions about Lordship Salvation, the Sinner's Prayer, Repentance, Altar Calls, Calvinism, the History of Evangelism, you name it. If it relates to this essential Christian doctrine of salvation of the soul it is in the book.

I apologize for this coming later than Sunday, or Monday as I planned. When I am so sick, I can sit for moore than a few minutes without getting antsy, then, well, I am not well.

Somebody is agreeing with Brother Don...sounds dangerous.
Yes, agreeing with me, puts one in dangerous company, but I have discovered that it was dangerous for those with Jesus, the Apostle Paul, and a few fundamental Baptist preachers of years gone by. (I am in NO WAY elevating myself to their level.)

>

I do have a way of stirring things up, it comes innocently, and naturally for me.

>

Thank you for reminding me of that, you are correct. It reminded me of the story Brother Hyles told when he was taught the lesson.
So what is the problem do you think? Are all the people in all these churches lazy? If they are do you think the previous pastor is at fault for not teaching them better?
I do believe the problem is in flawed, or teaching that is lacking. Few are taught at home to be creative, industrious, and productive. "WHERE THERE IS NO VISION, THE PEOPLE PERISH." Bob Jones, Sr. is quoted as saying, "There is no problem in America that one solid month of hard preaching on Hell could not cure."." We have no passion, or purpose to sacrifice for. I heard a story told about Charles Spurgeon. A young pastor came to him, and confessed he was not seeing souls saved, especially on Sundays. Mr. Spurgeon asked him, "Do you expect souls to be saved every Sunday?" The young pastor replied, "Well, no, not exactly." Spurgeon responded with, "You are getting what you expect."  The truth is, we are waiting for souls to walk the aisle, but, we have done nothing to entice them to come to our church long enough to get saved (greeting, enthusiastic services, visiting them,) we have not gone out during the week prospecting, we have not prayed fervently for souls. We have not worked, and yet we are expecting God to provide a bountiful harvest. Hmmmm...how is that working for us? How many of our churches have had souls saved, and baptized this year, and seen growth from God's method?
We have passion for our Christian school sports teams, for youth activities and senior saints gatherings, but soul winning, really?
I read that good leaders do not blame their predecessors for problems, they fix the problems, so I will not blame failed, or flawed teaching from others. We are each responsible for our own work. We have a Bible. But I stop there, because I believe most individuals in churches are not near as saved as what they claim, for if they were, they would also have the Holy Spirit convicting them, revealing to them, and urging them to do what is in the Bible.

If Fundamentalist churches are a mere shadow of their glory days which we all remember, how did this happen? I think this would be a good topic for the forum. What think ye?
Life was not as filled up back during our glory days, as it is now. Preachers were bold, and willing to preach the "WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD." Unfortunately way too many did so with egotistical, male chauvinistic bravado, but at least the truth came forth from the sacred desk.
I dare a preacher today to mention that it is not the movie theatre that is wrong (I pastored a church in a former movie theatre, the building had not really changed) but that it is the movie, whether in a theatre, or in a home, whether film, or DVD, it is wrong. (But to also have enough balance, and common sense to teach his people, and trust his people to realize there are some very good character building movies that are acceptable. {Boy, oh boy, this may stir up some things!})
And what about "AVOIDING THE APPEARANCE OF EVIL"?  And reminding the congregants that anything that takes you away from God is evil? What about naming sin, plainly, once again, with a heart that hurts for sinners being destroyed?
I dare the preacher to mention dressing properly, modestly, and men and women are to dress uniquely different one from another.
I dare the preacher to mention that following Rush Limbaugh as though he is equal to JR Rice, Lee Roberson, or Jack Hyles is foolish. The man smokes, drinks, cusses, is not a Baptist, I never heard him mention being saved (I have not read his books so please correct me if I am wrong on this one {and how many preachers would even be willing to make that statement, humble and sincerely?}) but we make him, and Glen Beck, and Sean Hannity out as prophets. Beck is Morman, Hannity a Catholic, what moore needs to be said?

What is the best way to correct these conditions?
As it is, I am not sure we can, with what we have presently as "fundamentalists." Methinks God may have to do to us, (He tarries His coming, Oh, Lord! Please do not, please!) what He did with the adult generation after the deliverance from Egyptian bondage, let us die off, and raise up a generation of saved souls willing to pay the price with sacrifice and create a new group of Bible believing, Bible practicing Bible propagating warriors of God.

Of course God is a Yankee, He built His throne on the sides of the North.
Yes, yes He has. :-)
You mean Don has a Christmas tree? I thought he was a Christian. Have you not read Jeremiah 10 Brother Don?
No  Christmas tree in our house, but if my family wants one, there will be. I have never found any of my family worshipping a tree (no tree huggers here!) If for a short period it will bring joy, and goodwill to the family, and others, I am not opposed to that (the Chapels I minister in each have one. I do nothing to put them up, or promote them, but I do not deny the men of them either.) The day after it was put up, the other Chaplain had to give his opinion on the subject, and my next two services were down 20-30% in attendance.  Though I am familiar with JEREMIAH 10, and do not criticize those who do not have a Christmas tree, I am not going to condemn those who do have one either. (Therein is part of our overall problem, we are far more concerned about a stupid lit up tree, and "Satan" Clause that we are about winning souls to Christ, and discipling them thereafter.)

I agree with the comment that was made in reply to earlier statements in this thread, if nothing else, church members could be calling through the phone book. I was thinking earlier this evening that one could call, wishing the receiving end a good day, letting them know they would be prayed for by name (maybe even asking if they had a special request to be brought before the Lord) and then in closing mention the name of their church.

Anyhow, this should "stir some things up."

Brother Don
