पञ्चाग्नयो मनुष्येण परिचर्याः प्रयत्नतः।
पिता माताग्निरात्मा च गुरुश्च भरतर्षभ॥६२॥
महाभारते उद्योगपर्वणि प्रजागरणपर्वणि विदुरवाक्ये अध्यायः ३३

The great scholar and minister Vidura is rendering his learned treatise on statecraft and lifestyle  management  to his King and elder brother  Dhritaraashtra.
"O bull of Kuru race, even man should serve with due diligence and sincerity the following five fires.  They are (1) his father (2) his mother (3) the fire itself (4) his own pure inner self (5) the preceptor."

Fire when properly channelled is the most benevolent and rewarding force one can have at his disposal. But the same fire, if neglected or made angry can destroy the whole world including the one who has fomented it.
 Right from birth we are all taught that the most important things in our life in the order of priority  should be mother, father, preceptor and the God. This is because the first three are before us as the physical manifestation of God while God himself stays in the background as a noble but invisible presence. 
The parents always work for the benefit of their offspring and would happily sacrifice everything they have for their benefit. They may not think of any rewards for this.  However all their life, dreams and expectations are hovering around their children. Spontaneous love is flowing from them like the nectar of the rays of moonlight  soothing the child....for them we are only children whatever our ages might be. But when their feelings get disturbed involuntarily because of some  wrong actions and deeds of the children, a destructive fire springs out from sorrow, and this fire, if not assuaged in time can burn up the son or daughter.  Applying value standards and criticism  to justify disrespectful treatment  are of no use  when it comes to our parents.  No one can become superior to his parents. After all we  originated from them. 
The fire itself is very potent.  Through fire, we cook food, through fire we offer oblations to all Gods, through fire we dispose off the garbage.  Fire was the first god we started worshipping..." agnimeelee purohitam... is the beginning of the Rg vedam".  But the same fire inundates forests, the same fire in the hands of a terrorist as gunpowder of a bomb causes terrible explosions and destroy life and all good things in the shortest possible time.  The leader of the armed forces shouts  "Fire.." as his  first war command.
The subtle self, innate in ourselves is also like fire.  Tended with calmness, this inner self gives us peace and bestows some purposefulness for our life.  If this soul is neglected, we are lost for ever.
The preceptor or Guru is also to be equated to our parents. Every person who has, at any point of time, enriched our knowledge or helped us  out in directing our own lives in a better way is a Guru. The neighbour, the boss, the colleague, the subordinate, the friend, all in addition to our teachers in academics should be treated as gurus.  God himself has manifested as guru in the shapes of Krishna, Shankara, Dakshinaamoorthy, Vyasa, Hayagreeva, Dattatreya, Ramanuja,  Jesus, The Prophet..the list is very lengthy. Will is be possible for us  to fight the  enraged fire coming from a  provocated preceptor and  continue our existence?

પાંચ આગ
મહાન વિદ્વાન અને મંત્રી વિદુર તેમના રાજા અને મોટા ભાઈ ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રને રાજ્યકળા અને જીવનશૈલી વ્યવસ્થાપન પરનો તેમનો વિદ્વાન ગ્રંથ રેન્ડર કરી રહ્યા છે.
"ઓ કુરુ જાતિના બળદ, માણસે પણ નીચેના પાંચ અગ્નિની યોગ્ય ખંત અને ઇમાનદારીથી સેવા કરવી જોઈએ. તે છે (1) તેના પિતા (2) તેની માતા (3) અગ્નિ પોતે (4) તેની પોતાની શુદ્ધ આંતરિક (5) ઉપદેશક."

અગ્નિ જ્યારે યોગ્ય રીતે ગોઠવવામાં આવે ત્યારે તે તેના નિકાલમાં સૌથી વધુ પરોપકારી અને લાભદાયી બળ છે. પરંતુ એ જ અગ્નિ, જો ઉપેક્ષા કરવામાં આવે અથવા ક્રોધિત કરવામાં આવે તો, જેણે તેને ભડકાવ્યો છે તે સહિત સમગ્ર વિશ્વનો નાશ કરી શકે છે.

જન્મથી જ આપણને બધાને શીખવવામાં આવે છે કે અગ્રતાના ક્રમમાં આપણા જીવનમાં સૌથી મહત્વપૂર્ણ વસ્તુઓ માતા, પિતા, ઉપદેશક અને ભગવાન હોવા જોઈએ. આ એટલા માટે છે કારણ કે પ્રથમ ત્રણ ભગવાનના ભૌતિક સ્વરૂપ તરીકે આપણી સમક્ષ છે જ્યારે ભગવાન પોતે ઉમદા પરંતુ અદ્રશ્ય હાજરી તરીકે પૃષ્ઠભૂમિમાં રહે છે.

માતા-પિતા હંમેશા તેમના સંતાનોના ભલા માટે કામ કરે છે અને તેમના હિત માટે તેમની પાસે જે હોય તે બધું ખુશીથી બલિદાન આપે છે. તેઓ આ માટે કોઈ પુરસ્કાર વિશે વિચારી શકતા નથી. જો કે તેમનું આખું જીવન, સપના અને અપેક્ષાઓ તેમના બાળકોની આસપાસ મંડરાતા હોય છે. સ્વયંસ્ફુરિત પ્રેમ તેમનામાંથી ચંદ્રપ્રકાશના કિરણોના અમૃતની જેમ વહે છે જે બાળકને શાંત કરે છે....તેમના માટે અમે ફક્ત બાળકો છીએ, અમારી ઉંમર ગમે તેટલી હોય. પરંતુ જ્યારે બાળકોના કેટલાક ખોટા કાર્યો અને કાર્યોને કારણે તેમની લાગણીઓ અનૈચ્છિક રીતે વ્યગ્ર થાય છે, ત્યારે દુ:ખમાંથી વિનાશક અગ્નિ પ્રગટે છે અને આ આગ જો સમયસર કાબૂમાં ન આવે તો પુત્ર કે પુત્રીને બાળી નાખે છે. જ્યારે આપણા માતા-પિતાની વાત આવે છે ત્યારે અનાદરભર્યા વર્તનને યોગ્ય ઠેરવવા માટે મૂલ્યના ધોરણો અને ટીકાનો કોઈ ઉપયોગ નથી. કોઈ પોતાના માતા-પિતાથી ચડિયાતું બની શકતું નથી. છેવટે, આપણે તેમની પાસેથી જ ઉત્પન્ન થયા છીએ.

આગ પોતે ખૂબ જ શક્તિશાળી છે. અગ્નિ દ્વારા, આપણે ખોરાક રાંધીએ છીએ, અગ્નિ દ્વારા આપણે બધા દેવતાઓને અર્પણ કરીએ છીએ, અગ્નિ દ્વારા આપણે કચરોનો નિકાલ કરીએ છીએ. અગ્નિ એ સૌપ્રથમ ભગવાન હતા જેની આપણે પૂજા કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું..." અગ્નિમીલી પુરોહિતમ... ર્ગવેદમની શરૂઆત છે". પરંતુ તે જ આગ જંગલોને ડૂબી જાય છે, આતંકવાદીના હાથમાં બોમ્બના ગનપાઉડર જેવી જ આગ ભયંકર વિસ્ફોટોનું કારણ બને છે અને ટૂંકી શક્ય સમયમાં જીવન અને બધી સારી વસ્તુઓનો નાશ કરે છે. સશસ્ત્ર દળોના નેતા તેમના પ્રથમ યુદ્ધ આદેશ તરીકે "ફાયર.." બૂમો પાડે છે.
સૂક્ષ્મ સ્વ, આપણામાં જન્મજાત પણ અગ્નિ સમાન છે. સ્વસ્થતા સાથે વલણ ધરાવતું, આ આંતરિક સ્વ આપણને શાંતિ આપે છે અને આપણા જીવન માટે કેટલીક હેતુપૂર્ણતા આપે છે. જો આ આત્માની ઉપેક્ષા કરવામાં આવે તો આપણે હંમેશ માટે ખોવાઈ જઈએ છીએ.

ઉપદેશક અથવા ગુરુ પણ આપણા માતાપિતા સમાન છે. દરેક વ્યક્તિ જેણે, કોઈપણ સમયે, આપણા જ્ઞાનને સમૃદ્ધ બનાવ્યું છે અથવા આપણા પોતાના જીવનને વધુ સારી રીતે દિશામાન કરવામાં મદદ કરી છે તે ગુરુ છે. પાડોશી, બોસ, સાથીદાર, ગૌણ, મિત્ર, શિક્ષણશાસ્ત્રમાં આપણા શિક્ષકો ઉપરાંત બધાને ગુરુ તરીકે ગણવા જોઈએ. ભગવાન પોતે કૃષ્ણ, શંકરાચાર્ય, દક્ષિણામૂર્તિ, વ્યાસ, હયગ્રીવ, દત્તાત્રેય, રામાનુજ, જીસસ, ધ પ્રોફેટના સ્વરૂપમાં ગુરુ તરીકે પ્રગટ થયા છે.. યાદી ખૂબ લાંબી છે. શું આપણા માટે ઉશ્કેરાયેલા ઉપદેશક તરફથી આવતી ક્રોધિત આગ સામે લડવાનું અને આપણું અસ્તિત્વ ચાલુ રાખવું શક્ય બનશે?

महान विद्वान और मंत्री विदुर अपने राजा और बड़े भाई धृतराष्ट्र को राजकीय और जीवन शैली प्रबंधन पर अपने विद्वान ग्रंथ का प्रतिपादन कर रहे हैं।
"हे कुरु जाति के बैल, यहाँ तक कि मनुष्य को भी निम्नलिखित पाँच अग्नियों की पूरी लगन और ईमानदारी से सेवा करनी चाहिए। वे हैं (1) उसके पिता (2) उसकी माँ (3) स्वयं अग्नि (4) उसका अपना शुद्ध आंतरिक स्व (5) गुरु।"

आग जब ठीक से प्रवाहित होती है तो वह सबसे परोपकारी और पुरस्कृत शक्ति होती है जो किसी के पास हो सकती है। लेकिन वही आग, अगर उपेक्षित या क्रोधित की जाती है, तो उसे भड़काने वाले सहित पूरी दुनिया को नष्ट कर सकती है।

जन्म से ही हम सभी को सिखाया जाता है कि प्राथमिकता के क्रम में हमारे जीवन में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण चीजें माता, पिता, गुरु और भगवान होनी चाहिए। ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि पहले तीन भगवान की भौतिक अभिव्यक्ति के रूप में हमारे सामने हैं जबकि भगवान स्वयं पृष्ठभूमि में एक महान लेकिन अदृश्य उपस्थिति के रूप में रहते हैं।

माता-पिता हमेशा अपनी संतान के लाभ के लिए काम करते हैं और अपने लाभ के लिए खुशी-खुशी अपना सब कुछ कुर्बान कर देते हैं। वे इसके लिए किसी पुरस्कार के बारे में नहीं सोच सकते हैं। हालाँकि उनका सारा जीवन, सपने और अपेक्षाएँ उनके बच्चों के इर्द-गिर्द मंडरा रहे हैं। सहज प्रेम उनमें से बहता है जैसे चन्द्रमा की किरणों का अमृत बालक को सुहाता है... उनके लिए हम केवल बालक ही हैं, चाहे हमारी उम्र कुछ भी हो। लेकिन जब बच्चों के कुछ गलत कार्यों और कार्यों के कारण उनकी भावना अनैच्छिक रूप से परेशान हो जाती है, तो दुःख से एक विनाशकारी अग्नि प्रकट होती है, और यह आग, अगर समय पर शांत नहीं होती है तो पुत्र या पुत्री को जला सकती है। जब हमारे माता-पिता की बात आती है तो अपमानजनक व्यवहार को सही ठहराने के लिए मूल्य मानकों और आलोचनाओं को लागू करना किसी काम का नहीं है। कोई भी अपने माता-पिता से बड़ा नहीं हो सकता। आखिर हम उन्हीं से उत्पन्न हुए हैं।

आग अपने आप में बहुत शक्तिशाली है। अग्नि से हम भोजन पकाते हैं, अग्नि से हम सभी देवताओं को भोग लगाते हैं, अग्नि से हम कूड़ा-कचरा निकालते हैं। अग्नि वह पहला देवता था जिसकी हमने पूजा शुरू की... "अग्निमीली पुरोहितम... ऋग्वेद का प्रारंभ है"। लेकिन वही आग जंगलों को जलमग्न कर देती है, वही आग एक आतंकवादी के हाथों में बम के बारूद के रूप में भयानक विस्फोट करती है और कम से कम समय में जीवन और सभी अच्छी चीजों को नष्ट कर देती है। सशस्त्र बलों का नेता अपनी पहली युद्ध कमान के रूप में "आग..." चिल्लाता है।
सूक्ष्म आत्म, हमारे भीतर जन्मजात भी अग्नि के समान है। शांति के साथ, यह आंतरिक आत्म हमें शांति देता है और हमारे जीवन के लिए कुछ उद्देश्यपूर्णता प्रदान करता है। अगर इस आत्मा की उपेक्षा की जाती है, तो हम हमेशा के लिए खो जाते हैं।

गुरु या गुरु को भी हमारे माता-पिता के बराबर होना चाहिए। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति जिसने किसी भी समय, हमारे ज्ञान को समृद्ध किया है या हमारे अपने जीवन को बेहतर तरीके से निर्देशित करने में हमारी मदद की है, एक गुरु है। शिक्षा में हमारे शिक्षकों के अलावा पड़ोसी, बॉस, सहकर्मी, अधीनस्थ, मित्र, सभी को गुरु के रूप में माना जाना चाहिए। भगवान स्वयं कृष्ण, शंकर, दक्षिणामूर्ति, व्यास, हयग्रीव, दत्तात्रेय, रामानुज, जीसस, पैगंबर के रूप में गुरु के रूप में प्रकट हुए हैं। सूची बहुत लंबी है। क्या हमारे लिए एक उकसाने वाले गुरु से आने वाली क्रोधित आग से लड़ना और अपना अस्तित्व जारी रखना संभव होगा?
