Gail Wekenborg asked me to share this information about the need for Buddy Pack helpers.

Juanita

Juanita and Azelene,

I am wondering if you can share this note with members of UMW and CCWC. ....Thanks, Gail

Buddy Pack Program

We are in need of delivery people for Lawson and Thomas Jefferson schools. Buddy Packs are delivered to the schools every Thursday morning beginning Sept 5. The packs are obtained from the Food Bank warehouse on Ashely Street between Madison and Monroe. The warehouse is open from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Delivery people get the packs for their assigned school at the warehouse. Boxes and carts are available to help with the loading. The Food Bank volunteer from Columbia will also help you load. The delivery people take the packs to their assigned school. All schools have carts or helpers to assist with the unloading. Depending on where the volunteer lives and what school they are assigned, the work takes about 60 to 90 minutes each week. We have about 6 substitute delivery volunteers who will take your delivery on days that you have other obligations. I just need to be notified at least one week in advance to make the arrangements.

On Thursdays when we wake up to snow and there is no school, there is no delivery that week. All the school in JCPS have a supply of emergency Buddy Pack items for such an event.

Not sure what a Buddy Pack is? It is a backpack or plastic Tbag that has nonperishable food items for children to have over the weekend when there is no school lunch. It will weigh about 3 pounds but no more than 5. Students are selected by the school counselor and principal based upon family need. Parents must also sign a permission form for their child to receive the Buddy Pack. The program has been operating at Thorpe Gordon, East and South schools since the fall of 2006. The program expanded in 2008 to include more of the JCPS and finally in 2010 it began serving all the elementaries and the middle schools of JCPS.

If you or someone you know is interested in this very vital program of the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, please contact me at 680-2974. Your help is needed to feed the children.
