Taking ownership does not change permissions. That command looks like it will grant the Administrator account Full control and leave the other ACLs (but you should always test this on a small sample of data).

I have VMWare workstation installed on a 64 bit Win XP Pro machine. Under favorites, I thave Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64 bit and windows xp professional. (Usually they also show up in tabs at top.) If I select either one in the favorites, and click "open" I get error message stating "this virtual mahcine appears to be in use. If this virtual machine is already in use, press the Cancel button to avoid damaging it. If this virtual machine is not in use, press the take ownership button to obtain ownership. Configuration file I:\My Virtual Machine\Windows XP Professional.vmx" If I click take ownership, I get the same message, if I click cancel, nothing happens. I get the same problem on the linux virtual machine, although it was not running when windows automatic update shut down my main win xp x64 pro machine. How do I correct this problem and get back to work?

I don't want to reinstall, like ever. I have a lot of customizations and tweaks that will take forever to redo. I just maintain my OS, do my housekeeping and follow best practices for a good hygiene.

You can run the above mentioned commands in Command Prompt to manually take ownership and grant full permission and control on any desired file or folder via command-line. Just replace filename and foldername terms in the commands with the actual file name and folder name.

Just tried that, and still it wont let me take ownership. It does the same thing as before. Tried all the other methods of taking ownership that I have found and nothing works. Command Prompt acts like it wants to, but then shuts down before it finishes. None of the anti-virus will even run to try to get it off. Tried changing permissions, but it says I need permission from the computer administrator, even though I am the administrator and tried the hidden admin account. I cant see the permissions and it keeps telling me that I need Read permissions.
