But we are not talking about what you see in amateur boxing and professional boxing. We promise! High school boxing programs can provide students with the basic fundamental skills of boxing, while also teaching them lifelong fitness skills.
In fact, boxing classes have become widely popularized across the country much like yoga, pilates, and dance. And just like yoga, pilates, and dance are taught in physical education as a step towards lifetime fitness, so should boxing!
While boxing training has been coming onto the scene as a popularized form of fitness for adults, it has not gotten the same attention at the high school level. That is why at PLT4M, we set out to make an Intro To Boxing program that can be utilized by any physical education class.
This program aims to introduce students to key boxing concepts like footwork, offense, and defense. In addition, students will build their general fitness skills with bodyweight exercises and different circuit style training.
Better yet, it can be done anywhere. There is no equipment needed! All you need to run this successfully is space to move around. If by chance you have access to some boxing equipment like heavy bags, there are certainly ways you could incorporate those if you wanted.
The remainder of the workouts in this boxing program (12 total) combine the different skills first introduced, and continue to build on new boxing skills. And we will give you a taste of that by showcasing lesson 4.
Each workout is a total body workout! Odd rounds (1,3,5,7) consist of boxing exercises. Students will be instructed to practice different combinations and can practice at their own pace or follow along with Sean, our instructor. Even rounds (2,4,6,8) consist of bodyweight circuits. The 8th round wraps up with a core cashout. We occasionally switch up the format of the rounds, but always follow an 8 round workout.
No prior boxing experience needed! We do strongly recommend that students have taken part in some form of introductory fitness program as we jump right into bodyweight circuit training that requires a basic understanding of movements.
Your instructor for all of our boxing lessons will be Sean Lally. When Sean moves, you move! Mirror his moves as he takes you through this full workout. There are some times during the circuit work he will stop and coach you, but keep moving as he encourages you through the workout!
Each workout will follow the same format as a typical boxing match. That means we will have 8 rounds that consist of 3 minutes of work. You will have a minute of rest between each round to shake it out, grab some water, and get ready for the next round.
A friendly reminder: When Sean moves, you move! Mirror his moves as he takes you through this full workout. Sometimes, during the circuit work, he will stop and coach you, but keep moving as he encourages you through the workout!
As we wrap up the first three lessons intended to cover all of the basics, continue to focus on great form and technique! These lessons are setting the foundation for future workouts where we will start to put more and more of these moves into full-blown workouts.
When it comes to deciding if you want add a high school boxing program to your physical education class, it is important to consider the overall objective. For us here at PLT4M, we want to empower students with different ways to workout and be fit.
Lastly, remember that boxing is for everyone! We often unfairly associate different fitness activities with gender. Bodyweight boxing is an excellent high intensity workout that any and all students should give a try.
PLT4M has a whole slate of instructional content for you to choose from! Grab from our library of pe lesson plans that includes fitness, weightlifting, mindfulness, nutrition, pilates, dance fitness, and more.

Katrina: A little nervous because I can only do arm curls with 10-pound weights. But I really wanted to find a workout that strengthens my arms so I can carry my baby niece for longer periods without getting tired. And being able to lift things just seems like a valuable skill I should have by the time I turn 30.
We arrived at the gym on a Tuesday afternoon. Other students were jumping rope, hitting the small speed bags and working on their punches. After Joe and Cedric wrapped our hands for protection, we grabbed some jump ropes to get our heart rates going. Each round in boxing is three minutes, therefore, so were our exercises.
Katrina: I used to love Jump Rope for Heart in elementary school and prided myself on how long I could jump without messing up. Now, jumping for three minutes straight is almost unbearable. I messed up a lot, mostly because I was too out of breath to keep going. We only did two three-minute rounds (with one minute of rest between them). I really need to work on my stamina.

This is the first in a series of video articles in which I work the boxing punch pads. I suppose if we boxing coaches saw ourselves as teachers, then the punch pads are the ultimate in boxing lessons. I say this because working with the punch pads is central to the preparation of any boxer for competition.
Whilst I will not be going into the fine detail of working boxing lessons on the pads, I will be pointing out in each video the philosophies and techniques that I hold dear. On top of this I will highlight some of the issues that I am getting from the boxer (there is a different boxer working in each video) and the boxing lessons that I am trying to convey. My hope is that there is something here for everyone, be you a coach or a boxer.
Punch pads are effectively the next step up from the heavy bag and the step down from actual sparring. So by making sure that my stance and the position of my pads mimic as closely as possible an actual opponent is for me vital in the boxer gaining the maximum benefits from the session. A further example of this is at around 1:19 where Joe fires in a jab to the head followed by a right uppercut to the body. My left pad is spotted on my solar plexus, the exact spot where a good right uppercut to the body would land.
I understand that you wanted the boxer to react your movement when you lowered you bads for calling the bodyshots, but have you ever thought using the waist belt ? Then the boxer could counter the straight punches with body shots and it would be possible for you to shoot the quicker counterpunches too. If you want the boxer to react, just slam your bad to the waistbelt for calling the bodyshot. When I tried the waist belt for first time I promised myself never to leave it off when training with the boxer. It is a great tool.
hey i just wanted to leave you a comment thanking you for posting these videos and doing what you do. so thank you. i have always been a situational mitt holder (same type style you go for here), but i always make sure i incorrperate a lot of defensive slips, weaves, etc. into changing angles, cutting corner, pivots, etc. Example: jab jab cross hook bob n weave pivot jab jab cross. do you find this effective ? i never really understood the whole mayweather style mitt holding. it seems so unrealistic, what is your take on mayweathers mitt style?
1) Most of the punches onto one target. Like you do in this video, make the fighter fire his 1-2 combinations into one mitt and avoid the paddycake style of punching where the fists always criss-cross on either side of the trainers head. The mitt is the size of the head and most criss-crosses encourage bad form.

Formerly known as Marciano's Gym, the WBG was established in 1991 exclusively as a boxing facility. Since its debut under the leadership of Rocky Marciano's brother, this location has been the training ground for countless boxing legends. Our resident fighter is champion Tomasz Adamek who is trained by reputable boxing coach Roger Bloodworth. After dominating in both the Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight Divisions, Adamek is working his way through the Heavyweight ranks. With an impressive career of 49 wins (which equals Rocky Marciano's career win total) and 2 losses, he is scheduled to fight on November 16th for the #2 ranking in the IBF. The WBG has also supported the careers of Andrew Golato, Arturo Gatti, Michael Moore, trainer Tony Atlas, and even for a time, Mike Tyson.
Since its early days as just a boxing facility, the WBG has expanded to provide for a more typical gym experience. In addition to an extensive amount of boxing equipment, we have cardio machines, free weights, classes, massage and tanning. Everyday Jersey City residents work out beside boxing history in the making. So if you're looking for a unique fitness experience free of unnecessary fees, overcrowding, and parking anxiety, WBG is the place for you. Our classes include Yoga, Zumba, and Boxing/MMA.
