Hi! Can’t remember when I posted last... just wanted to say that the show in St. Paul/Minneapolis at the Turf Club was really fun. Great crowd. This whole last tour was very exciting. Probably the best tour since Luna. It was great to focus on the whole Dean Wareham jukebox. Also wanted to mention that Pitchfork did single out Snowstorm as one of the best Galaxie 500 songs a while back. I agree that it should be on a list of top 10, but I thought the other selections were very good. Even the covers. Happy 50th, Andy. I’ll be 51 soon….

    Hi Andy and all,

As one well past my 40s (and over half way through my 60s) I also miss the social exchange that once existed on this list.

I saw Dean and band last Saturday at the Turf Club in Minneapolis. It was a very good show, with a good mix of G500, Luna and Dean songs. The songs from the recent solo record came across even better live. The encores of Ceremony and Indian Summer were excellent as usual.

As for what I'm listening to these days, I really like the new Augustines self-titled record. They were previously know as Pela, then We Are Augustines before shortening to Augustines. Missed their show by a day. I also am enjoying the most recent Glasvegas release "Later When the TV turns to static". Also saw their recent show in Mpls and they seem to be distancing themselves from everything on the Euphoria CD. Which is unfortunate, their best encore-closing song is on that one. Also like the Palma Violets record...they cancelled a show here when they got booked on one of the late night shows.

Never had a chance to say "hi" to Dean and Britta for you, Andy. Maybe next time.

... well, as for what I'm listening to (that isn't old) ... I'm getting my ears ready for Indietracks,,, so as well as Dean, I've been listening to

    The Spook School http://thespookschool.bandcamp.com/album/dress-up
    Joanna Gruesome (still) http://joannagruesome.bandcamp.com/
    Franny and Zooey http://frannyzooey.bandcamp.com/album/bananafish

And lots of old stuff too because of my imminent 50th birthday http://www.grange85.co.uk/swirling/50-films-and-50-albums/

As someone in their forties, as well, I too, miss the old listing or 'social media' that this list generated; mostly: "What's everyone listening to right now?"
Over the years, I have been introduced to an innumerable amount of great music and bands.
    Love to hear it...

someday I'd like to hit a Dean show in London, but he's never there when
    I'm there.... :-(

Over on Stereogum a top 10 Galaxie 500 tracks was posted that left out
Snowstorm (and Oblivious and Blue Thunder) which was like leaving
Strawberry Fields off a Beatles Top 10, or 23 Minutes off a Luna one.

    http://www.stereogum.com/1675671/the-10-best-galaxie-500-songs/list/

Now the other people I know of who rate Snowstorm as high as I do are both
British and I wonder whether that is significant, perhaps because of
Galaxie 500 playing Snowstorm on Snub TV back in the day.

So … an I wrong in thinking of Snowstorm as the pinnacle of their greatness?

    (By the way, I'm not!)

Firstly, of the 10, three are covers, which is a bit of a back handed
compliment. Secondly, yes, Snowstorm certainly trumps several songs on
this list. I agree with Andy, Snowstorm, Blue Thunder and Strange were
the holy trinity that made my head explode.

Nice to hear from you Britta, not 50 yet, but will be by the time you get over here next month. Heard so many good reports on the shows it's certainly got me quite excited for the shows. Was hoping to fit in a couple but probably won't manage it... quite fancied a trip to Leamington Spa but don't think it's feasible without a car.

Agreed that Stereogum's list was pretty good - and I think it'd be impossible to come up with a definitive list because there are so many great Galaxie 500 songs - which is quite something for a band with just three LPs!

funny, I actually mentioned to Britta in an email that it struck me while listening to the DC show that this really is a great time to be a fan of Dean's music, we got an equal slices of G500, Luna and new stuff, and the new stuff fit in pretty seamlessly with the older.... as for "Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste", I think it's kinda like how many people would put "All Along The Watchtower" on a list of Jimi Hendrix's best even though it's a Dylan tune..... sometimes a band makes a song their own, and I know when compiling a setlist for the shows I'm at, I always struggle with DLOYGTW and Ceremony, in terms to labeling them by their original artists or the fact that Dean/Britta/Band are doing the G500 versions of those tunes.....

I remember, when Radiohead covered Ceremony a few years back, getting quite excited that a band as huge as Radiohead were covering Galaxie 500... then I remembered!

I think I mentioned that that happened to me twice.... once was Steve Wynn's band The Baseball Project doing his old band's (Dream Syndicate) "That's What You Always Say", and again when I saw Alice Cooper and he did "Only Women Bleed"..... in both instances, my first thought was "cool, they're doing Luna"..... :-)
