Events of the final day of the first Cylon war follow Lieutenant William Adama, a Viper pilot and Helena Cain, a child. Flashbacks of Adama discovering a lab housing the early Cylon experiments on humans as well as the first Cylon hybrid and Helena Cain abandoning her little sister during a Cylon invasion of Tauron finish as the first Cylon war ends. Each character is left hanging somewhat (Adama is unable to free the surviving prisoners and Cain cannot find her sister). These are shown to be driving forces for their actions as the show continues. Cain goes on to teach Shaw that you have to become a 'razor' to survive during war while referring to her pocket knife, which later becomes Kendra's and then is passed on to Kara Thrace at the end of the film. Admiral Adama teaches his son Lee a different lesson: that they cannot become butchers.

Lee Adama's first mission as commander of Pegasus is a mission to retrieve a lost science team. Antiquated Cylon Raiders from the first war appear and attack Pegasus. Simmering bitterness between Kara and Shaw is exacerbated when Shaw endangers Kara and her wingman to defend the battlestar. Both pilots land safely, though Kara has to destroy a Raider that follows her into Pegasus.

Another questionably inserted scene wasn't actually a flashback, but immediately proceeds a flashback from the broadcast version. In the broadcast version, Admiral Cain gives a speech to Shaw using the metaphor of a razor. It's a good scene. In the extended version, there is a scene literally immediately after where Starbuck quotes her mother, then Shaw quotes Admiral Cain from a flashback we saw only seconds ago. I hadn't even seen the broadcast version, but I could tell one of those scenes was not supposed to be there just by how awkwardly placed this second conversation is.

Still, the theme of being a razor - always alert, recognising the exceptionality of war, making brutal in-the-moment decisions and living with them - is quite well done, and in some ways better conveyed than in the show.

Returning to Shaw's flashback, she is providing maintenance to computer equipment in CIC while the full scale of the damage to Pegasus is being assessed. Roughly a quarter (723) of the crew are dead and more in sickbay. 31 vessels, including Vipers and Raptors are lost or irreparable. The battlestar itself is dead in space and can neither jump away or defend itself. Belzen estimates they are 4-5 jumps away from the Cyrannus star sytem, but with wireless com traffic going dead over the past two days, Cain sends out a Raptor recon team rather than wait for repairs. Shaw meanwhile has found malicious coding within the latest CNP patch which can be used as a backdoor, and suspects Cylon remote access was responsible for reports of the defense grid failing.

I even forgot to leave a comment for razor, i finally watched it, and am in the middle of season 4 already.

I think it is advisable to watch as the author johnny walker and others recommend in here, towards the end of season 2, almost no spoilers as it talks specifically about a character in Pegasus crew. I would although recommend stopping the movie razor 10-15 minutes or even 5 minutes before it ends, as I believe it gives away something in ending, and I believe this should be watched at the end of season 3.

Great guide again :)

as a new fan of the series i want to thank you for this list, as i will be watching them all on DVD the first time through this chronological list really helps regarding order placement of 'the plan' and 'razor'. the question that i have is are all the webisodes included on the DVD editions? from reading product descriptions (i have to purchase seasons 3,4, & 4.5 to round out my collection) i know that 'the resistance' webisodes are included in the sesason 3 box set. as i am waiting on the mail for 'razor' i don't know if the 'razor flashbacks' webisodes 1,2, & 7 are part of the deleted scenes that amazon lists on the product description. also what about 'the face of the enemy' webisodes that wikipedia lists? are these included on perhaps the season 4 or 4.5 boxed set? and where do they best fit into your chronology? any help here would be hot, thanks a plenty!

ok after further perusal of your episode guide i answered most of my questions, and feel like a bit of an ass for not looking more closely in the first place. however my question regarding the 'razor' DVD is still unanswered. again thanks.

I watched the series before, except razor, the plan and the webisodes. I forgot who were the cylons. I was trying to watch this by the suggested viewing order of this blog but after watching season 2. I watched razor and now the plan. I was surprised to learn that the wife of XO Saul tigh is a cylon. It was never revealed in any previous episode. So was this a mistake in the viewing order or it was meant to be revealed in the plan? Because the revelation was so casual, i'm thinking there is an error in the order.

Pegasus is just another battlestar until it manages to survive the veritable Pearl Harbour that is the Scorpion Shipyards attack. The chaos of such an event is captured so well in the madness of explosions and Raiders, and we really do feel the desperation that forces Cain into making a blind jump to escape. There are times when a mash of CGI destruction can be very beneficial, and this is one of those moments: it makes us perceive and understand the fear that is at the very heart of Cain, that Shaw chooses to overlook or is ignorant of.

Adama and his flight lead, Banzai, engage in bloody dogfights against Raiders as Operation Raptor Talon commences all around them in orbit of an ice planet. During the battle, the battlestar Columbia is pummeled from basestar salvos and is subsequently destroyed. Adama then spots two Raiders entering the planet's atmosphere. Out for revenge, Adama engages the two. He shoots down one in the high altitudes. Inside a cloud, he suddenly collides with the other and falls to the ground in his disintegrating craft.

The movie's name comes from a line by Cain as she explains to that becoming this hard and cold in the face of such tragedy turns you into a "razor" and that this war is turning everybody into razors. She says this with an ever brooding sadness, while playing with her switch blade.

One of the best storylines of the new Battlestar Galactica was the three-episode arc that consisted of Pegasus and Resurrection Ship Pts 1-2, dealing with Admiral Cain as played by Michelle Forbes. Cain and the Battlestar Pegasus had been introduced in the original Battlestar Galactica two-part episode The Living Legend, which was also repackaged as the cinematic feature Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1979). There Cain, played by Lloyd Bridges, was the commander of one other surviving battlestar who ended up endangering the stability of a combined mission with his reckless desire to go out in a blaze of glory. The Admiral/Commander Cain story received a radical reworking on the new Galactica. Aside from Cain now being a woman, she was depicted as a commander who had engaged in ruthless actions in order to continue her fight against the Cylons, including shooting dissenters and pillaging and then abandoning civilian craft for their supplies. The situation ended with the two battlestars at war and both commanding officers preparing to assassinate the other.
