Hi all,

Hope everyone had a good break and a happy new year na krub. I’d like to share my experience on extending my visa in a third country. I’m not sure if this will apply to everyone, but if it is, I hope it can be useful to you.

I think by now everyone should know that IIE only issues us a one-year-valid DS2019. That means, although we can get DS2019 reissued every year, our visa will be valid only one year at the maximum. Even though it’s true that we can stay in the US as long as we have our valid DS2019 with us, we cannot get back into the US if our VISA is expired. Of course, the most direct way to have our visa renewed is doing it at the US Embassy in Thailand—this is not always possible for everyone and every situation.

Another way to get around this problem is doing it at an US embassy outside the US, such as those in Canada, Mexico, Japan among others. Canada is the best choice. Since it is the applicants’ top choice, Canada government prepared things for this matter. To extend our visa in Canada, we first need to book the interview date at the US embassy website. Then, to get a Canada visa in order to get entry permit to Canada, send that booking document along with other required documents to Canada Embassy. Oh, before leaving the US, we also need a signature from IIE representative in our DS2019. But for US embassies in other countries, things might get a little bit more complicated.

For me, I applied for my visa at the US Embassy in Japan. I thought it was as easy as that of Canada, but I was wrong. Japanese Embassy here in Chicago told me that since my US visa was expired, there was no guarantee that I would get my US visa extended in Japan, and would be able to get back to the US. That’s why, they decided to reject my visa application to Japan. What I did was I requested letters from IIE and from my university indicating that I was a Fulbright grantee currently enrolling in a graduate program here. I also attached them the scheduled document that I made at the US embassy in Japan website. Things went fine this time.  And things went smoothly at the US embassy in Japan as well.  Well, almost, I didn’t realize that my DS2019 wasn’t stapled to my passport the way it was. So I forgot to bring my DS2019 along with my passport on the way to Narita and had to change my schedule a bit. But I’m back here, fighting for another tough quarter.

Hope all is well for everyone and stay warm, but not too warm krub,

Non

Thanks Non for the tip. I hope everyone is doing well krub. My legal training here has also been tricky when it comes to French visa issues, so while I've warped out from the mysterious IIE universe, I still share that feeling of wanting to beam me up there Scot[iie]!

Happy New Year too all, with postcards from the French Alps,

Dear Ptip, P'Nink and all,

Thank you very much krub for the encouragement as usual, especially for reminding us to get to know more about our own selves among other things.

Before we knew it, it's the final quarter already. While I feel like I need more time to learn more, I can't wait to get back home as well.

At this point, I'm kind of curious and wondering how everyone in our group is doing? ... I assume Nong Pa is sitting on a bench of some kind of juvenile court at the moment. It looks like New has decided not to go to Oxford and doing some kind of internship in France instead. Thank you, Non, for sharing your visa experience. Chai, you've set a very good example by remaining the first person responding to all emails. We've heard from Pu lately through the children's day wish. What about JJ, Peach, Pueng, and Don? Hope to hear a little update or at least a quick shout from you. Looks like it's impossible for all of us to meet here, but as Chai said, we'll get together soon--once we have returned to our individual nests--at the Fulbright Thailand nest (sometime in June?). ... Alright, I'd better stop rambling and get back to my paper.

Miss you all,
Phum, "the phuyai baan"

Hi P'Tip, P'Nink, P'Phum, Chai and folks krub,

As P'Phum pointed out, why don't we update our life a bit la krub? I realize that everyone might be super busy with their work/study but it seems as if we have been out of contact for a little while. Sometimes, sharing and listening to trusted friends' life stories  help us deal with our lives a little bit better. As Muriel Rukeyser said," the universe is made of stories, not atoms."

I can start na krub. At this point, it's definitely not my last semester although I wish it is. Not only does I'm in a quarter system (this is my second quarter of my academic year), but I'm also in a five-year doctoral program already.

This quarter is especially tough for me as I'm taking neuroanatomy--spending three days a week dissecting human brain and memorizing every bit of it. My research is going, but a bit slower than I thought. The main reason is because my PI ran out of her grant, and it's still uncertain if she will get tenured this year. Since my research studies are very expensive (costing about $600 an hour to run a brain scanner machine), things are not as easy as I thought it would be. Well, hopefully I can get a master by the beginning of the next year.

Because of this situation, I'm now looking for an opportunity to work with other labs while doing my works with my current PI. Also, it might be another possibility where I only get a master here and apply for a PhD program elsewhere, although it might be hard for me to get letters of recommendations from my current PI then if I do that. Now, P'Nink, I have a question krub: if I decide to get only a master here, how about the 2-year rule la krub? Do I need to wait for 2 more years before applying?

Well, I also have another question here too if you don't mind na krub. I think this question might be applied to others who go for PhD as we. If I decide to continue to do PhD here, do I need to change my Visa status from J1 to F1? If you do not know the answer to my question, who should I talk to regarding changing Visa status krub? My university international office or IIE?

Oh, it seems like I just turned my life story to questions to P'Nink : ). haha, my bad. Well, I hope to hear from others too na krub.

Best,

Non

Dear All, Thanks to the replies na ka. It's always a pleasure to get your mail and learn a bit more what's going on in your lives ka.

Yes, for JJ, you'll have one more year under the Fulbright grant while all others will have completed by then. Several like Chai, Peach and Pueng sure will stay on for PhD. Would be nice to hear from JJ, Pa and New-- the other two happen to stay out of the country na ka!

Non's course sound so challenging ka but for you guys and girls, if it isn't tough, it isn't fun and definitely not as fruitful for your professions and careers na ka!

Our pooyai-baan has so nice things to share as usual na ka. We're waiting for you to be back to visit universities and schools with us na ka, inspiring students to pursue their dreams as you can be one great role model for them ka.

Talking about Phum, we'll be thinking of you all when we go to Chiang Mai this year as Pi Poon insists that we do the rice planting again-- scare me off again:)) but I know what to expect laew ka!

Take care ka.

Dear Ptip, P'Nink, Non and All,

Thank you krub Ptip for reporting progress on behalf of some of us. Speaking of visiting universities and schools, I'm sure each of us in this batch has compelling stories to inspire younger generations.

Non, I enjoyed your story alot. You described it so vividly about what you had to do with human brains.

Well, have fun in the mud na krub for those going to Chiang Mai.

Dear all,
Glad to hear story from some of you.
I'm fine here. I passed qualify exam last Fall and I'm working on my thesis. This semester is quite hectic for me because I also have to work as teaching assistant. My research works fine for me. One good thing about bioinformatics is you don't need to spend much money on it. Anyway, it's not as fast as I think.
I meet some of us occasionally. I met P'Pa when she come to State College and I met Peach when I went to Fulbright enrichment seminar at Texas. I plan to go to workshop in Seattle in June and I hope to meet P'Pu before her graduation. If possible, I would like to go to see P'Phum also. I have never been to Boston before even though it's not too far from here. Non and Peung are not so far from here and I think we can also meet for sure. You both are in one day driving distance actually but I didn't have a car. For New, maybe we can meet in Thailand. If possible, I would like to visit everyone. Or if someone want to see largest football stadium in US, try Penn State creamery, or live in walking distance to sky resort; you are welcome to visit State College.
Take care,
Chai

Dear All,

Thank you Chai for sharing your situation. I can see you're doing well with your studies and are making the most out of it. I know that Non is playing with human brains in his field of neuro-psychology (if I'm not mistaken), what are you dealing with in bioinformatics? Actually, you've explained to me already what it's all about, but a gist of it or a topic of your thesis would give me some ideas about what you're working on. I commend you for making an effort to meet some of us and have planned to meet the rest. Apart from New, I only met Pa and Don in DC when Ptip and P'Poon went there. Speaking of Don, I'm wondering how he's doing. [...Come on Don, give us a shout. Are you still in the Silicon Valley or back on the main campus in PA aready? You created this google group for us to benefit from and you should make use of it too (haha)].

I didn't plan to write more than several lines as I'm still struggling with my case study and practicum (internship) at the same time and I also know that all of us are in the same situation. However, since Non and Chai made an effort to share their stories, I should take some time to tell all of us the kind of situation I'm in at the moment as well.

It's kind of pity that I've been in Portland, Oregon for more than four months and haven't got a chance to go to the nearest city like Seattle to meet Pu. I hope to do that when I'm completely done with my practicum and submitted the final draft of my case study. Actually, my case study is not really a scholarly thesis. It's just a masters paper, about 45 pages in length, but it still takes up the most part of my time. The nonprofit organization that I'm working with provides trainings (workshops) to different communities throughout Oregon. My job is to facilitate a community leadership development training program and I'm conducting a case study based on this program.

Congratulations for those who have been accepted to the PhD programs already. I had planned to apply for East-West Scholarship to pursue a PhD program at the University of Hawai'i but I missed the deadline due to my poor time management and the deadline was far too early. Anyway, I'll make sure to join the following year as it is a good fit for me.

Well, I'm afraid I've exceeded the word limit. So, I'll leave it right here and hope you all get through this challenging time with some "reasonable" problems. I'll try to remember Ptip's warning that "if it's not hard, it's not good enough".

Best wishes,
Phum

I see. I just know that P'Phum has already move to other town and P'Don has already returned to Thailand. Hmm, I may need to up to date more.
My thesis is about chromosome breakage prediction. Anyway, this is just the beginning of it, so I can't explain much in detail. (because I don't know much.)

Thanks to Chai and Phum for the nice update ka. It's real good to know what you're up to though in the case of Chai, he isn't sure how things will turn out like other scientific experiments (though I was a 'wit' student, my science background is real weak ka!)

Phum ka, I'm glad to hear you're planning to work for your PhD. See how things go then na ka. There're opportunities yoo laew ja.

Pu has been quiet and should jump in some time soon na ka, hopefully. A few are knocking on your door soon.

Keep in touch na ja.

Thank you krub Ptip and P'Nink for cheering me up. I'll think of it as "thinks happen for a reason" krub. Thank you krub for informing me about Don. Good for him to finish early.

Chai, you're in good company! Your topic sounds very scientific and sophisticated, though. I like it, even though it's beyond my comprehension :)

I'm returning to campus in Boston between late April and early May. I plan to take a bus or train through the south (style poo-yai bann) and will stop at different places instead of in one go like when I came here. I may be able to see Peach in Austin and you or even Peung at Cornell on my way back. It's just a dream and hope it will come true.

Best,
Phum

Hello and Happy 2011 to All:

Thanks to Non for his always helpful information. I am afraid I might end up working on the same visa issue sometimes in the near future.

I came back from home last week and now survive among international MDs and post-docs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center with the hope to be able to catch them up some days. Also, I am still collecting credits in the PhD program at University of Cincinnati with the hope that they can fulfill the requirement in time to help manage my financial supports.

As far as my travel plans go, walking distance to ski resort is indeed very tempting ja Chai. Phum's trip seems like a memorable one to join. Keep us posted ka p' Phum!

Take care,

JJ

Phum ka, I wish others could join you in this
pooyaibaan tour as it sounds so interesting and you'll get to see more of the
country too ka.

Thank you krub Ptip and P'Nink for cheering me up. I'll think of it as
"thinks happen for a reason" krub. Thank you krub for informing me about Don.
Good for him to finish early.

Chai, you're in good company! Your topic sounds very scientific and
sophisticated, though. I like it, even though it's beyond my comprehension
:)

I'm returning to campus in Boston between late April and early May.
I plan to take a bus or train through the south (style poo-yai bann) and will
stop at different places instead of in one go like when I came here. I may be
able to see Peach in Austin and you or even Peung at Cornell on my way
back. It's just a dream and hope it will come true.

Best,
Phum

Thanks to Chai and Phum for the nice update ka. It's
real good to know what you're up to though in the case of Chai, he isn't sure
how things will turn out like other scientific experiments (though I was a
'wit' student, my science background is real weak ka!)

Phum ka, I'm glad to hear you're planning to work for
your PhD. See how things go then na ka. There're opportunities yoo laew
ja.

Pu has been quiet and should jump in some time soon na
ka, hopefully. A few are knocking on your door soon.

Keep in touch na ja.

I see. I just know that P'Phum has already move to other town
and P'Don has already returned to Thailand. Hmm, I may need to up to date
more.
My thesis is about chromosome breakage prediction. Anyway, this is just
the beginning of it, so I can't explain much in detail. (because I don't
know much.)

Dear all,
Glad to hear story from some of
you.
I'm fine here. I passed qualify
exam last Fall and I'm working on my thesis. This semester is quite hectic
for me because I also have to work as teaching assistant. My research
works fine for me. One good thing about bioinformatics is you don't need to
spend much money on it. Anyway, it's not as fast as I
think.
I meet some of us occasionally.
I met P'Pa when she come to State College and I met Peach when I went to
Fulbright enrichment seminar at Texas. I plan to go to workshop in Seattle
in June and I hope to meet P'Pu before her graduation. If possible, I would
like to go to see P'Phum also. I have never been to Boston before even
though it's not too far from here. Non and Peung are not so far from here
and I think we can also meet for sure. You both are in one day driving
distance actually but I didn't have a car. For New, maybe we can meet in
Thailand. If possible, I would like to visit everyone. Or if someone want to
see largest football stadium in US, try Penn State creamery, or live in
walking distance to sky resort; you are welcome to visit State
College.
Take care,
Chai

Dear Ptip, P'Nink, Non and All,

Thank you krub Ptip for reporting progress on behalf of some of us.
Speaking of visiting universities and schools, I'm sure each of us in this
batch has compelling stories to inspire younger generations.

Non, I enjoyed your story alot. You described it so vividly
about what you had to do with human brains.

Well, have fun in the mud na krub for those going to Chiang Mai.

Dear all in the batch krub,

Please be informed and warned that Non's case is very exceptional.
TUSEF does not encourage all of you to apply visa extension in the third country na krub.
If you can, please come back to Thailand to do it then.

Good luck for all of you krub.
