Hi all,
Hope everyone had a good break and a happy new year na krub. I’d like to share my experience on extending my visa in a third country. I’m not sure if this will apply to everyone, but if it is, I hope it can be useful to you.
I think by now everyone should know that IIE only issues us a one-year-valid DS2019. That means, although we can get DS2019 reissued every year, our visa will be valid only one year at the maximum. Even though it’s true that we can stay in the US as long as we have our valid DS2019 with us, we cannot get back into the US if our VISA is expired. Of course, the most direct way to have our visa renewed is doing it at the US Embassy in Thailand—this is not always possible for everyone and every situation.
Another way to get around this problem is doing it at an US embassy outside the US, such as those in Canada, Mexico, Japan among others. Canada is the best choice. Since it is the applicants’ top choice, Canada government prepared things for this matter. To extend our visa in Canada, we first need to book the interview date at the US embassy website. Then, to get a Canada visa in order to get entry permit to Canada, send that booking document along with other required documents to Canada Embassy. Oh, before leaving the US, we also need a signature from IIE representative in our DS2019. But for US embassies in other countries, things might get a little bit more complicated.
For me, I applied for my visa at the US Embassy in Japan. I thought it was as easy as that of Canada, but I was wrong. Japanese Embassy here in Chicago told me that since my US visa was expired, there was no guarantee that I would get my US visa extended in Japan, and would be able to get back to the US. That’s why, they decided to reject my visa application to Japan. What I did was I requested letters from IIE and from my university indicating that I was a Fulbright grantee currently enrolling in a graduate program here. I also attached them the scheduled document that I made at the US embassy in Japan website. Things went fine this time. And things went smoothly at the US embassy in Japan as well. Well, almost, I didn’t realize that my DS2019 wasn’t stapled to my passport the way it was. So I forgot to bring my DS2019 along with my passport on the way to Narita and had to change my schedule a bit. But I’m back here, fighting for another tough quarter.
Hope all is well for everyone and stay warm, but not too warm krub,

Thanks to Non for his always helpful information. I am afraid I might end up working on the same visa issue sometimes in the near future.
I came back from home last week and now survive among international MDs and post-docs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center with the hope to be able to catch them up some days. Also, I am still collecting credits in the PhD program at University of Cincinnati with the hope that they can fulfill the requirement in time to help manage my financial supports.
As far as my travel plans go, walking distance to ski resort is indeed very tempting ja Chai. Phum's trip seems like a memorable one to join. Keep us posted ka p' Phum!
Take care,
JJ

Thank you krub Ptip and P'Nink for cheering me up. I'll think of it as
"thinks happen for a reason" krub. Thank you krub for informing me about Don.
Good for him to finish early.
Chai, you're in good company! Your topic sounds very scientific and
sophisticated, though. I like it, even though it's beyond my comprehension
:)
I'm returning to campus in Boston between late April and early May.
I plan to take a bus or train through the south (style poo-yai bann) and will
stop at different places instead of in one go like when I came here. I may be
able to see Peach in Austin and you or even Peung at Cornell on my way
back. It's just a dream and hope it will come true.
Best,
Phum

Thanks to Chai and Phum for the nice update ka. It's
real good to know what you're up to though in the case of Chai, he isn't sure
how things will turn out like other scientific experiments (though I was a
'wit' student, my science background is real weak ka!)
Phum ka, I'm glad to hear you're planning to work for
your PhD. See how things go then na ka. There're opportunities yoo laew
ja.
Pu has been quiet and should jump in some time soon na
ka, hopefully. A few are knocking on your door soon.
Keep in touch na ja.

I see. I just know that P'Phum has already move to other town
and P'Don has already returned to Thailand. Hmm, I may need to up to date
more.
My thesis is about chromosome breakage prediction. Anyway, this is just
the beginning of it, so I can't explain much in detail. (because I don't
know much.)

Dear all,
Glad to hear story from some of
you.
I'm fine here. I passed qualify
exam last Fall and I'm working on my thesis. This semester is quite hectic
for me because I also have to work as teaching assistant. My research
works fine for me. One good thing about bioinformatics is you don't need to
spend much money on it. Anyway, it's not as fast as I
think.
I meet some of us occasionally.
I met P'Pa when she come to State College and I met Peach when I went to
Fulbright enrichment seminar at Texas. I plan to go to workshop in Seattle
in June and I hope to meet P'Pu before her graduation. If possible, I would
like to go to see P'Phum also. I have never been to Boston before even
though it's not too far from here. Non and Peung are not so far from here
and I think we can also meet for sure. You both are in one day driving
distance actually but I didn't have a car. For New, maybe we can meet in
Thailand. If possible, I would like to visit everyone. Or if someone want to
see largest football stadium in US, try Penn State creamery, or live in
walking distance to sky resort; you are welcome to visit State
College.
Take care,
Chai

Dear Ptip, P'Nink, Non and All,
Thank you krub Ptip for reporting progress on behalf of some of us.
Speaking of visiting universities and schools, I'm sure each of us in this
batch has compelling stories to inspire younger generations.
Non, I enjoyed your story alot. You described it so vividly
about what you had to do with human brains.
Well, have fun in the mud na krub for those going to Chiang Mai.
