She's survived plane crashes, shipwrecks, vehicular collisions, and just about every type of gunfight that you can imagine. Lara Croft is the ultimate tomb raider with a mind for puzzles and an insatiable appetite for the truth.
While the core gameplay elements of action, adventure, skill, and sass remain the same, as does Lara's badass attitude, the tombs have almost more or less been left behind - a development that not everyone likes. As Lara uttered these words it showed just how much the settings and stories, in particular, have evolved.
Puzzles and riddles and maps. Uncharted territory and the lost worlds of the past. The British family was fond of knowledge, and they sought it all over the globe. Lara brings that inquisitive nature with her to every tomb and every ruin.
When you're the best tomb raider in the world, you don't rely on luck. Sure, it helps from time to time, but that can't be the solution to all your problems. Improvisation should depend on intelligence and cunning, not chance. Which is why Lara Croft has overcome many different villains.
The hub world also allows us to open up geographically. While I enjoyed the single locations of the past three games (with Yamatai and Siberia having some geographical variety), the hub world allows our explorer to find all the pieces to a treasure in one location (after finishing all the tombs), before heading off to a new location with its own hub world and selection of tombs.
Mafia had an open city to drive around in, but many prominent locations were just off the map edge, giving the countryside a sense of danger and making any mission set outside the city tenser. There were several places in the city of Lost Heaven that the player was under no obligation to visit, such as the Lost Heaven Lighthouse or Dam. I think something like this but for Tomb Raider, like a disguised path leading to an optional tomb or puzzle, would be a good addition.
Last year, marked the 20th anniversary of the Tomb Raider franchise, Lara Croft has showcased her kickass fighting skills and mountain, cave, or tomb was scary enough to deter her from getting what she wants!
Nilin is another character who is fighting against a future government. At the beginning of the game, all of her memories are gone. Throughout the game, Nilin slowly remembers her martial arts skills, as opposed to just instances in time. Definitely a kickass woman! Check out the awesome site where I found this picture!
Huo's writing background couldn't be a better fit for a feminist sword and sorcery story: The Witcher is an old-world fantasy that features a similarly swashbuckling protagonist, while many consider Tomb Raider to be synonymous with kickass female action heroes. Soloway's empathetic, darkly comedic directing on Transparent and I Love Dick should also bring an interesting depth to the movie. At such an early stage, the unwritten project could still go in many directions, but with Huo and Soloway teaming up, Red Sonja already has a lot of potential.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend sees Lara travelling the globe, visiting cinematic and exotic locations. She scours ancient tombs, dangerous jungles and snowy mountain ruins in search of an ancient English artefact. She is pitted against rival forces led by a face from her past - a nemesis long thought dead. But Lara has an arsenal of modern equipment at her disposal, including a magnetic grappling device, frag grenades, a personal lighting device and sophisticated communications equipment. Gamers can now experience tomb raiding as never before.
