I am 35 and I hate to admit, I am a die-hard 'Clash of Clans' fan and I easily spend about 30-40 minutes everyday playing it since 2014. So, what is this game all about? and how did it even teach me anything?

Clash of Clans is a freemium mobile MMO strategy video game developed and published by Supercell. The game was released for iOS platforms on 2 August, 2012, and on Google Play for Android on 7 October, 2013. From rage-filled Barbarians with glorious mustaches to pyromaniac wizards, you can raise your own army and lead your clan to victory. You can build your village to fend off raiders, battle against millions of players worldwide, and forge a powerful clan with others to destroy enemy clans. It is free to download and play, however some game items can also be purchased for real money. (Source: Android Playstore)

For the more curious friends of mine, Supercell started developing games for mobile devices and has since then fully released four mobile games: Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, and Clash Royale, which are freemium games and have been very successful for the company, the first two generating revenue of $2.5 million a day in 2013. In the game, you can join a clan by building a clan castle in your village. And depending on the level of your castle, you can get troops from fellow clan-mates to help you either in your own personal wars against other villages or to help you during the clan wars. Over the last few months, I have been part of numerous clans and my observations are based on my in-clan experiences.

My first clan experience was similar to my first job (in real-life). I joined the organisation and was awestruck with the facilities, with people who got great accomplishments and I was learning all the while from everyone in some or the other way, by observing them, by speaking to them and by getting mentored by them. And then I quit one day because, I did not like the frequency at which they were going to war with other clans - I wanted it to be more frequent and they were too slow.

Clan castle is like an organization.. Let's say a Startup. No body on earth will fund you to create your clan castle. You have to bootstrap, pour in your savings and create one. A lot of us, including you, must have thought about starting up on your own one day and some of you would have already started.

I also had a lot of dreams - to start my own clan, invite warriors with very strong villages whose defenses can not be broken, who are cooperative and share their strategy and wisdom with other clan-mates, who are responsive and donate troops to others and who are responsive in the clan chats. I wanted to build the clan so that it will be a SuperClan - No defeats and All wins. No body quits the clan ever because I will invest in the folks joining the clan.

I did exactly what I thought - Created the Clan and invited folks. Out of 50 people I invited, only 1 or 2 joined the clan but they left after a few hours. Then I decided to lure them with rewards and to the new folks who joined, I started asking them if they needed troops and I gifted them troops, even dragons! They stayed a bit longer but then eventually left a day after. Then I decided to give them special recognition by promoting them as Elders. It looked like it worked.. but just for sometime and they quit. Then I decided to make them co-owners of the exercise and made them co-leaders in the clan, spoke to them in chat, gave them troops when they needed. And it worked for the longest period I ever saw - 2 days! And that's it. The co-leader left and I stopped inviting people to the clan. Today, I have not closed the clan to join another clan.. I still have the experiment running but without any activity.

Most of the times, you and I think about starting up our own ventures, getting away from the salaried culture, to be our own boss. All that is fine, but shit. If the only reason you want to move out of your current job is because you don't want anyone to give you orders, believe me - you are better off playing clash of clans and being the only one in your castle, rather than standing alone in real-world.

When Clash of Clans first opened on my iPad, there was a notification about In App Purchases in the app. The notification suggested that preferences can be adjusted in Settings to turn off IAP. I was thankful for this reminder, and I adjusted my settings immediately before proceeding into game play.

Beware of the Chat Room. Within a few weeks of having this game my 11 yr old allowed someone to join the chat, a person she thought was a friend. That person was soon cursing and asking offensive and inappropriate questions about her body. Then that person asked where she lived. I would not endorse this game.

Excellent post! We are a clash family also and often sit on the couch with our devices comparing notes lol. I have created a clan for my family because there are too many inappropriate characters out there. I make sure everyone in our clan is nice, respectful and does not use bad language. So far we have a really nice team of people. Adults, teens and kids who appreciate a clan with nice people ?

I too decided to take an active interest in my sons clash of clans but was completely horrified to find my sons friends using disgusting language , abusing and bullying each other. While you can report people in global chat it does not appear you can do so in clan chat. I was so disturbed I made it my mission to let all their parents know how shocking it was as many are completely unaware of what their children were doing. I also brought it up with their school principal so a warning could be published in the school newsletter as the bullying was out of control.
If you allow your child to download it I think it is wise to closely monitor it.

Wow, these are some great posts, Me and my son often play this game too, hes the stratergist and im the upgrader and mine and pump collector! We often have some fun times with this game, but as all the others have said, the global can be a nasty place. So we tend to stay away from clans and global and just enjoy the game together ?

Thanks so much for this post and all the great comments! My son wants to download this game. After a mishap I had with our teenage daughter and an app, I am really, really researching any apps and games my younger son wants. These were all really helpful!! I think I will even play the game with him!

Great informative website. Clash of clans is a great game. The chat is optional and if you do chat,
you can change the mode of chat to clan which is you only see chat from the people in your clan, or global.

Clash of Clans is an online multiplayer game in which each player is a village chief. Every player builds their village by using resources and trains troops to attack other player villages to gain resources and trophies. Players can (and usually do) form communities called clans, which are groups of up to 50 people. Clans players can donate troops to each other and can go on war with other clans. There are multiple currencies or resources in the game, including Gold, Elixir, Dark Elixir, Gems and 3 different ores, Shiny Ore, Starry Ore, and Glowy Ore.[3] Gold and Elixir are used to build and upgrade buildings like defenses, resource collectors etc. Elixir and Dark Elixir are also used to upgrade troops and spells. In the past, they were also used to train the troops but since July 2022 training is made free.[10] Gems are the premium currency. They can be earned by completing in-game achievements or bought using real money.[3] The 3 ores are all used to upgrade the heroes, or hero equipment, at different levels. Attacks are rated on a three-star scale and have a maximum timed length of three minutes.[3]

The game also features a pseudo-single-player campaign in which the player can attack a series of fortified goblin villages[11] and earn resources. Trophies however are unable to be obtained from it and can only be obtained in multiplayer.

To perform any upgrade, an unassigned builder is needed. The player initially has two builders, but can have up to six builders. They are bought by using gems (up to 5th)[12] and sixth is unlocked by completing a series of challenges in Builder base (another village).[13]

To earn and store gold and elixir, players must build mines and storage for each. Elixir is used to carry out research in the laboratory to upgrade troops, and to build and upgrade certain (mostly offensive) buildings. Gold is used to build defensive buildings and to upgrade the town hall, which allows access to more buildings and higher levels for existing buildings. At Town Hall 7, dark elixir becomes available; this type of elixir is used to train and upgrade dark elixir troops, heroes such as the Barbarian King, and starting at Town Hall 8, create dark spells. To earn and store dark elixir, players must build dark elixir drills and dark elixir storages.

There are a number of buildings available to the player to defend their village, including cannons, mortars, archer towers, wizard towers, Inferno towers, an Eagle artillery, Scattershots, a Monolith, air defenses and spell towers. There are also traps including Tesla towers, bombs, giant bombs, tornado traps, seeking air mines, and air bombs. Players can also build walls, which can be upgraded further as a player's town hall level increases.[14][15] As the Town Hall level increases, the player gets access to stronger buildings such as the Monolith and the Eagle Artillery.[16]
