The TPP Is a Giant Giveaway to the Biggest Corporations
Tell Congress to Reject This Dangerous Trade Deal

Another Dirty, Secret Trade Deal Will Hurt People and the Planet

Stop Secret Trade Deals

NO on the TPP!

Dear Alison,

Have you heard? TransCanada — the company behind the Keystone XL Pipeline — is suing the U.S. over lost profits after President Obama's decision to block the pipeline from being built.

It sounds ludicrous, but TransCanada is allowed to file this lawsuit under a provision in NAFTA. The TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) has a similar provision, opening the U.S. up to even more lawsuits like this from more corporations and bigger corporations claiming that our democratic laws hurt their expected profits. Critical laws to protect the food we eat and the water we drink are under threat.

Tell your members of Congress to oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership to protect the U.S. from ludicrous corporate lawsuits.

When the text of the TPP was released this past November, it was even worse than we had anticipated. The language is more aggressive than previous trade deals, and gives corporations even more power — including the right to challenge democratically enacted laws in the U.S. using new provisions snuck into the TPP by big business.

The deal was negotiated by about 500 "advisers" from the world's most powerful corporations, while the public was left out of the conversation.

Now we need Congress to step in to stand up for the public and block the TPP.

As if these international lawsuits weren't bad enough, the TPP is a huge threat to American jobs, local fracking bans, food safety rules, GMO labeling laws and renewable energy. I wish I were exaggerating how bad this deal is, but I'm not.

Don't let corporations challenge our democratically created laws that protect our health and safety.

The good news: We can stop this.

President Obama's trade ambassador will sign the deal on February 4 in New Zealand. Then the president can submit the 6,000-page trade deal (along with “implementing” legislation to bring U.S. laws and rules into “compliance” with the TPP) to Congress. Once that happens, Congress has 90 days to cast their vote — yes, or no — no amendments or changes.

This process has already taken far longer than supporters of the deal expected, thanks in large part to Food & Water Watch supporters taking action to ensure that your members of Congress represent you over the biggest corporations. With one last vote, we know we can wield this same power to stop this bad deal for the American people.

Our plan: We are ramping up pressure on Congress to stop this bad deal before it's too late. We'll be contacting you with opportunities to get involved with actions like calling your members of Congress, dropping petitions and educational material off at their offices in your area, and more. We'll also give you opportunities to connect with our experts to learn more about what the TPP would mean for you and your community.

In order to put an end to the treacherous TPP we need you to work with us, and thousands of others across the country, to make sure Congress halts this dangerous bill.

Will you join me in asking Congress to vote to oppose the TPP?

Thanks for taking action,

Caitlin Seeley George
