So far shop class attendance has been sustained primarily by freshman and sophomores entering FTC. This I really have no right to complain about. In fact, had the only attendees been rising juniors, I would be sending out this same email encouraging more FTC students to attend. That said, I feel it's my duty to give Mr. Howell's shop class a "Highly Recommended" rating. And furthermore, to encourage anyone coming into FRC to attend these classes.
No matter what job you plan on undertaking in the program, a time will come when you need to make something yourself (looking at you programmers) because everyone else is too busy, not present, or is the poor sap who never bothered to learn basic machining in their robotics career. You don't want to be the person staring clueless at the mill as it screeches at you. We'll help you out, but during build season the eye rolling you'll receive from us will be insurmountable.
So juniors, please attend a few classes, or at the very least join Mr. Howell's google group. You can read through his recaps from last year. Most of them have some in depth videos attached, just know that if it takes you 5 minutes to read a recap, then your reading them wrong. Read it once, look at the pictures and videos, and keep looking back and forth until you have a good idea about what's happening. If you still don't get it, send Mr. Howell an email or feel free to come to the class. Mon, Wed, Fri 3:00-5:00.
Just as Mr Howell said,
Make yourself a stronger team play(er) for next season by honing your skill now.
