Programming
- Approximately half of the teams present were using April Tags or planning to use them. Can be a challenge but getting there.
- In addition to a camera, some teams are using odometry sensors and color sensors during autonomous.
- The Navigation Targets are not being used by most teams. Teams are using color sensing and April Tags instead …
- Most teams plan to program some "smart buttons" be the end of the season. They are just not there yet.
- One team has partial routines (e.g., lift, deposit, retract) but has not strung them together into a sequence yet.
- Diverse approaches to sharing the programming work ..from function specialists, to paired driver/programmers, to tag-team programming
- Most teams have multiple autonomous programs corresponding to the 4 different robot placements at match start.
- One team has a program that senses where the robot is and self-select the program branch to execute.
- Open CV seems to be favored over tensorflow …which several teams cited as more difficult to use.
Mechanical Design, CAD and Build
- Teams reported shaking out early design ideas in Period #1, modifying in Period #2, and refining in Period #3.
- Use of a rubber-band of slingshot design seems to be the launch method of choice for drones. Very few, if any, flywheels seen.
- Ideas for preventing dropping the drone included folder a thicker drone for better grasp and a cover over the launcher (though not seen)
- Another idea for preventing dropping the drone was a paper clip retention bar that is release prior to launch.
- Almost all agreed that picking up two pixels at a time is the way to go …and the pixels are tougher to lift than last year's cones.
- Teams agreed that there were many advantages to a pixel intake system, rather than picking up a pixel with a grasper.
- Speed was the primary advantage of pixel intake systems (i.e., no need for precision, just pull it in and guide it into the grasper internally).
- For quick repair of a 3D printed part (at an event), it was suggested that teams keep a 3D Pen among their supplies.
Judging Topics
- Teams discussed the 16-page Engineering Portfolio which is needed in order to eligible for awards.
- The Engineering Notebook is no longer mandatory but essential if judges visit a team's pit for more information.
- It is smart to capture through photos, or other means, how your team's robot has evolved/improved over the season.
- Engineering Portfolios must be hard copy per FIRST requirement, but the Notebook can be electronic.
- The key point with the Notebook is to be able to very quickly answer the question of a pit-visiting judge with great some great data.
- Teams talked about the composition of the judge interview (5 minutes team presentation, 5 minutes Q&A)
- One team reminded all about the Control Award … to definitely consider it and to bring a completed Control Application to the event.
- The Feedback Form and new policy of preparing one for every team whether they ask for it or not. Don't leave the event without it.
