Trog,
I see you two exchanging barbs and all it amounts to is you guys don't
get along. Such is life. We all don't always get along and none of
us always agree. All that means is nothing bro. There's been lots
of in fighting lately.

I am not going to say your over reacting here, but I hope you are, and
that's no big deal. Take a break if you must,; everyone does from
time to time. But come back and hang out with us again here and at
AvC.

That's my story and I am sticking to it.

I'm sure we'll miss all those substantive, enlightened, informed posts
you've made. I'm sure somebody could point to one. Remember, it's

trog pushed for this little spat thing for months before I retaliated,
and now he's playing the victim. Fuck him. He's a useless little

I know he has his moments but they're not that big a deal.

We all do.

If everyone hated me for being so bitchy last week ...

Anyway it happens. We all screw up.

trog flamed me unprovoked several times and I took your advice to
"ignore it", which is interesting considering that you go on about how
ignoring trolls never works but nevermind, I agree with you about
that. trog flamed me several times over a period of weeks (maybe
months), I didn't reply to those, and I even replied to him on other
threads very nicely as if I didn't even notice his repeated trolls on
me. The second I take off the gloves and respond to push with shove,
he throws a fit like I'm bullying him. I hardly see how this is
different from e_space or xnun's behavior, and if we're going to get
on Brock for having double-standards for the trolls on his side I
frankly don't think we should be doing the same thing.

Yes well you can ignore it to a point but when someone goes to extreme lengths it's a problem.

I think both of them deliberately posted stuff to the main site, knowing I was online, in order to provoke a scene, because they knew I'd remove it and warn them, and because they wanted an excuse to make a scene.

I forwarded some to the Mod Board but from now on *everything* is getting forwarded to the Mod Board.

I've noticed that he goes through "bitchy" times (like I did last week) because he's done it with me.

I just point out his mistake and ask him what's going on and he backs off.

I don't know what his problem is with you but I've noticed the sniping and it's true, to your credit you have ignored a lot of it (most of it).

He probably just needs a break.

True. I'm giving some serious thought to this.

I don't know if I'm right or wrong on this one but I think what really bugs me is that they are doing it deliberately and they are so blatant about it.

Anyway XNun got what she wanted which is a bunch of recruits so she doesn't have to sit there talking to herself all day long and she did us a favor by ensuring that her new recruits consisted of most of the worst trolls.

The only one's remaining are the completely insane ones that everyone does pretty much ignore.

And TC, I'm convinced, is just a brilliant Poe, so I doubt he's going anywhere. Lol.

Things are pretty calm right now and if they come back it'll be obvious to everyone that they were causing the problems not us.

1) I have to agree that your flaming Dev seemed largely unprovoked.

2) It seems absurd to me that you're leaving just because of one spat with one member.

3) Bitchy "I'm leaving" posts like this always seem pathetic to me.

4) I don't know what Dev being a mod here has to do with anything. Do you think your posts or your membership is in danger here? Whatever you think of Dev personally, you'd be hard pressed to claim that he abuses his power against those he dislikes. After all, xnun and Brock are still at AvC, and I've had my tiffs with Dev, yet I'm still here.

Overall, I think you're overreacting, trog.

The difference being that his sniping at me was sustained and he never
really does anything but attack people with short posts anyway. We
just took a different perspective on it because he was usually doing
it to the other side. I have admitted, for what it's worth, that I am
guilty of a double-standard myself for treating trog with kid gloves
and defending him for so long.

> I just point out his mistake and ask him what's going on and he backs off.
>
> I don't know what his problem is with you but I've noticed the sniping and

I ignored it until I didn't. If someone, unprovoked, came out of the
blue with "fuck you" and "you're like checkers", etc. over and over
again to you or Multi, I highly doubt you wouldn't have eventually
said something back that wasn't so nice. The simple fact is that every
regular poster has retaliated for less than what trog has said to me,
so I don't think anyone can blame me for responding back without
holding different standards to me than they do to themselves.

> He probably just needs a break.

The reason he's blowing his top so badly is that he can't sustain an
argument for why he's the good guy in this. He wanted to play the
victim after quite a long period of time in which he was randomly
trolling me and I was being civil to him, and when I pushed back and
made him look dumb he quickly figured out that the facts wouldn't
support his pathetic martyr complex, which so closely resembles that
of the other trolls who do nothing but troll and then whine when
legitimate posters fire back.

Of course, and I understand. Of course, trog has made similar
statements that infer he just wants to cause trouble. The problem is
that we're all guilty of making posts that do nothing but fuck with
the other posters. The difference is that we do it in response to the
trolls, giving them their own medicine while being more clever and
intelligent about it and beating them at their own game for fun, while
posting substance the rest of the time, whereas the trolls never post
substance and engage in that kind of behavior exclusively. Whenever a
good poster responds to e_space, they're usually just doing a version
of the same thing and engaging in a flame war. So it seems to me we
determine trolls based not so much on what they do but what they don't
do: attempt to participate in substantial discussions. This creates a
problem with evaluating what qualifies as substantial discussion, with
the danger of us having an atheist bias. For example, if e_space
writes ten short, illiterate flame posts and one posts that touches on
Pascal's Wager, and trog posts ten similar flame posts and one post
that touches on how the Bible contradicts itself, atheists are likely
to say e_space is a troll and trog is not because in that eleventh
post trog is right and agrees with us and e_space doesn't. But the
difference is an atheism vs. Christianity difference, you know what I
mean? It's not something we're going to reach a consensus on.

Yeah, TC and Stoney create another problem: we'd wind up keeping some
obvious trolls just because we enjoy them more.

> Things are pretty calm right now and if they come back it'll be obvious to
> everyone that they were causing the problems not us.

Of course. So I wouldn't worry about it so much. Trolls do seem to
crave sympathy to an extent, which is why they want to play the
victims. They know that's the only way they can do it because they
understand that nobody is going to like them for their posts. You are
right that ignoring them usually doesn't work. But occasionally, when
they can't give themselves banned, they pull a trog/MacNevins. It's
funny that, as much as I defend the free speech rights of trolls,
having me in a moderation position seems to work as a natural troll
repellent.

Thanks, Trance. And I realize another irony: that AvC moderation

them here. Actually, that makes sense if you think about it...no

Even the best of friends will have a dust-up on occasion. It's just
one of those those things that make humans 'human'.

Your voice and counsel mean more to some members than you think. We
need as many good atheist freethinkers as we can possibly get voicing
their reasoned opinions. The way things look at the moment we may be
on our way to the 2nd American Civil War.

(A bit of hyberbole perhaps, but you never know with the religious
right crazies, do you? Up for Texas seceding from the US, anyone? How
about a Confederate States of Fundamentalist Christianity? Okay, a bit
over-the-top with that one. Still need your voice anyway.)

Ooops! . . . meant to type 'Confederate States of Fundamentalist
*Christians*. They'd be residing in the land of fundamentalist
