BullGuardoffers advanced anti-malware protection, some pretty useful extra features, and a really good game booster that enhances PC performance for gamers. However, it has some shortcomings and there are better products out there, such as Norton or Bitdefender.

For my testing, I downloaded a huge archive of 997 malware samples to my PC, including viruses, trojans, worms, ransomware, spyware, adware, keyloggers, rootkits, and cryptojackers. I saved these samples in different locations around my disk, changing their file names. I even compressed some of the malware files in a ZIP archive.

Upon detecting malware on my system, BullGuard prompted me to initiate a Full Scan. The Full Scan took only 45 minutes, and it detected all of the malware files on my disk, including zipped malware and ransomware test files that many competitors failed to detect.

Game booster works on desktop computers with four core processors and makes sure two of those cores are dedicated to gaming, while other applications are pulled onto one or two of the remaining free cores. This gives your PC more power to run high-performance games and maintain a high framerate, even in CPU-demanding areas.

During gameplay, there was a noticeable increase in frame-rate with the game booster turned on. I was able to run Halo with the highest graphics settings on CPU-intensive Forge maps featuring tons of vehicles, which would normally result in some glitches like screen tearing and slow down.

The network scanner even sends a notification each time a new device logs onto your network. This is a useful feature, especially if you live in a city or crowded apartment building where people may try and hijack your Wi-Fi.

During my tests, I ran an on-demand scan on my home network, and BullGuard displayed a list of all my devices, along with information about their security settings and connection speed. The network scanner also saves each scan as a report, so you can identify any unusual changes happening over time by comparing reports.

BullGuard offers excellent live chat support, available in multiple languages (English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, and Romanian). I personally tested the English support and connected with a customer service representative in less than a minute. The representative efficiently answered all my questions, which was truly impressive.

I scheduled a meeting and received real-time support in under an hour. A representative gained access to my computer, conducted a thorough malware inspection, and found concealed test files all over my system. While this service does come with an additional charge, one payment provides 3 months of high-level support, making it a valuable option for users who are unsure about managing antivirus software.

The forums are another really helpful way to find answers to simple questions. I posted a problem on the forum, expecting another BullGuard user to help me, but instead got a reply from an official customer support agent in less than an hour.

Just like so many other antivirus applications, BullGuard antivirus promises to protect you online. This protection consists of the three classic components: protection against malicious websites, marking of malicious search results and BullGuard Secure Browser for your special web surfing needs. As so often, this functionality comes with issues of its own, some being unusually obvious.

The first and very obvious issue was found in the protection against malicious websites. While this functionality often cannot be relied upon, circumventing it typically requires some effort. Not so with BullGuard Antivirus: merely adding a hardcoded character sequence to the address would make BullGuard ignore a malicious domain.

Further issues affected BullGuard Secure Browsers: multiple Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in its user interface potentially allowed websites to spy on the user or crash the browser. The crash might be exploitable for Remote Code Execution (RCE). Proper defense in depth prevented worse here.

To implement this pop-up, the developers used an interesting trick: connections to port 3220 will always be redirected to the antivirus application, no matter which domain. So navigating to :3220/html?eWFob28uY29t will yield the following response:

Current BullGuard Antivirus release uses a hid parameter with a value dependent on website and current session. So neither predicting its value nor reusing a value from one website to unblock another should work any more.

And if the user clicks this message, a message will appear indicating that arbitrary JavaScript code is running in the context of secure://blocked-popups.html now. That code can for example call window.bgOpenPopup() which allows it to open arbitrary URLs, evendata: URLs that normally cannot be opened by websites. It could even open an ad page every few minutes, and the only way to get rid of it would be restarting the browser.

And finally, this vulnerability allows calling window.bgOnElementRectMeasured() function, setting the size of this pop-up to an arbitrary value. This allows displaying the pop-up on top of the legitimate browser user interface and display a fake user interface there. In theory, malicious code could conjure up a fake location bar and content area, messing with any website loaded and exfiltrating data. Normally, browsers have visual clues to clearly separate their user interface from the content area, but these would be useless here. Also, it would be comparably easy to make the fake user interface look convincing as this page can access the CSS styles used for the real interface.

Hello Sir, I've been reading your blog for quite some time already and I'm impressed with your findings. With that said, have you tried looking for bugs in Windows Defender's (now Microsoft Defender in W10 v.2004) optional sandbox mode? Microsoft said that this mode will lower the chances of attacks against the AV process to succeed. At the moment it is turned off by default, it would be interesting how well the sandboxed AV resist attacks or will it make detection poorer.

I'm not too much into attacking binary code which is what this would be about. In general, I know that Microsoft Defender has a very low attack surface, and running it in the sandbox definitely doesn't make things worse. I also looked into their browser extension a while ago and found it to be well-written. But that's as far as I go.

Before diving deep into this, a note: Bullguard was recently acquired by Avira. A few months before that, Avira itself was snapped up by NortonLifeLock. In other words, Bullguard is now owned by a subsidiary of Norton, and that may translate into a complete overhaul of Bullguard at some point. Then again, with three different antivirus brands under one roof, you have to wonder how long all of these different products will last.

Click on Custom Scan and a Finder window appears letting you choose a folder to scan. Otherwise, clicking the scan button starts a full scan. If you select the Settings cog in the upper right corner, it opens a preferences window with very straightforward (and minimal) settings for the antivirus. This window also contains the quarantine and application logs.

With that basic test out of the way we went hunting for live malware, and ran across a fake Flash installer on a torrenting website. After downloading the fake Flash DMG Bullguard spotted and wiped out some live malware right away. However, I was still able to install the phony Flash program.

Bullguard Antivirus for Mac costs $24.99 per year for a single device. It can also be added to your machines as part of Bullguard Internet Security, which covers 3 devices for a year for $60 or Bullguard Premium Protection, which covers 10 devices for a year for $99.

Bullguard for Mac is very basic, to the point that this protection feels like an afterthought. If the Macs in your life are also an afterthought and most of your home is running Windows then adding Bullguard to your Mac because you have an extra license is worth it for protection against mainstream threats.
