Please note that this configuration would not be capable of processing Lumions' high-end features such as 3D Grass. We recommend upgrading your hardware should you find that your computer is close to these minimum requirements.
Many of our customers use consumer (game-based) graphics cards when working in both Lumion and in their CAD software. Although there are slight differences between consumer and pro/workstation graphics cards, the consumer cards work fine in CAD software.
4.1: Multiple graphics cards (in NVIDIA SLI, NVIDIA NVLink, or AMD Crossfire configuration) will not boost the performance or render speed in Lumion. Lumion will only use the graphics card that is connected to the monitor that the Lumion window starts on.
4.2: Some of our users make use of two graphics cards connected to two different monitors. That way, you can use Lumion on one monitor/graphics card while the other monitor/graphics card is used for other software. This arrangement tends to have a negligible impact on performance.
Note that if other software is running which demands a lot from the computers' CPU, then this may result in extended render times as the computers' max performance will be split between many programs.
All Interior Design students not owning a laptop computer with the specifications listed below will need to purchase one by the Fall semester of the second year (once accepted into the program following First Year Review). This allows students to work on their own computer in studio classes. It is strongly advised students NOT purchase a new computer ahead of the recommended time, as requirements constantly change with software and technology upgrades. Our current advice for laptop purchases includes the following minimum requirements:
Processor: Latest multi-Core Intel i-Series, Xeon, or AMD equivalent with 2.5 GHz or Higher as a minimum requirement and 3+ GHz processor as recommended. NOTE: AutoCAD 2024 does not support ARM Processors on Windows devices.
Hard Drive: SSD (Solid State Drive) storage of 512GB minimum. Note: High-resolution images or 3D files can take considerable disk space where 250GB of space might not be enough. Program Revit ver. 2024 requires 30GB of free disk space, while program Lumion requires 75GB of free disk space; see manufacture recommendations.
Note: Most laptop vendors have integrated graphic/video cards instead of a dedicated graphics/video card, but we recommend purchasing a laptop with a dedicated graphics/video card as it will improve computer performance as your design work and presentations grow in complexity. Lumion is often one of the most graphic-processor-demanding rendering programs and could be a good gauge when anticipating your future needs. The Lumion program requires 6GB of graphic card memory as a minimum requirement, 10GB or more as recommended, and 16GB or more as high-end requirements; see Lumion requirements link below.
Students are strongly advised to purchase a desktop color printer with scanning capabilities. Printing paper size is 8.5 x 11.
Students are encouraged to find a suitable scanning application that can be added to the phone that they carry.
Students may want to purchase an external hard drive to backup their laptop. Also, have a couple of thumb or flash drives on hand to easily transport information between the computers in the department and your laptop.

In addition to the computer requirements for all School of Architecture students, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning have some additional required specifications for the laptop computer to meet the need of the core courses:

19201080 recommended. If you wish to run Lumion from your laptop, we recommend a graphics
card scoring at least a G3DMark of 10,000 or higher at least 6GB of memory. Specs for Lumion

A fast solid state drive (SSD) is included by default on all Orbital workstations. Fast drives will help improve file loading, saving, and transferring times. For most AutoCAD workstations, we recommend at least a 500GB solid state drive for your operating system and all programs, as well as a traditional hard drive as needed for long-term storage of spare data. We also offer Samsung M.2 NVMe PCI-e SSDs which operate at speeds nearly 5-6 times faster than normal SSDs for maximum storage performance.
Lumion will only make use of a single video card, even if you had multiple GPUs installed, so in order to maximize performance, start with the most powerful GPU that fits within your budget and specify the rest of the build around that, taking into account max CPU GHz value and robust cooling and power supply in order to keep that GPU running at peak performance.
