Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) ( 27.99 USD Per Day )

Renters may purchase loss damage waiver (LDW) that reduces the financial liability for loss or damage to the Avis car as long as they comply with the terms of the Avis rental agreement. Cost of LDW will vary by location, car group and rate. If you have rental car coverage through your personal insurance or charge card, LDW offers maximum protection while your personal insurance or charge car may contain a deductible.

It is not required to purchase extra insurance when rent a car, however, you take risk by yourself for the area not covered by your own insurance.

Most of credit cards have the benefit of covering LDW, check on your credit card company.

If you have liability insurance, you do not need to buy it at car rentals.
Collision and Comprehensive insurance are different -- they are bound to the car you drive.
In other words, your own insurance does not cover these two on other cars.

Some credit cards, such as Platinum cards, provide collision and comprehensive coverage.

Please correct me if my interpretation is out of date.

Jack,

Based on my experience I disagree with you on the insurance coverage. Usually the liability coverage in not transferable to rental cars. But if you have collision and comprehensive coverages they can be transferred to the rental cars. Credit cards such as Visa and Master card coverage may only kick in as secondary coverage.

To get an exact answer a call to the insurance company and credit card is recommended.

Here is the reply from geico:
Thank you for using GEICO's online services.

If you were to rent a vehicle in the United States, U.S. territories, or Canada for 30 days or less, you would be covered up to the limits currently listed on your GEICO policy.

Please note that if you are traveling outside the state of Florida, but still within the United States and its territories, you would not be entitled to your Personal Injury Protection as this is a state specific coverage.

Although GEICO would cover the rented vehicle as if it were your own, we would not be responsible for any costs you might incur as a result of the loss of use of the vehicle by the rental agency.

The above message says:
1. All policies, liability, comprehensive and collision, will be extended to car rental.
2. Outside the State, PIP will not be covered.
3. Any costs at car rental (business loss due to the event, etc.) will not be covered.

According to my information, MasterCard Platinum card and American Express card "should" cover the vehicle.  If your car insurance policy does not do the same, you might want to change it; if your credit card does not cover the car rental, you might want to get one that does.  Please verify this with your credit card and auto insurance company.

Someone has three cards:
One for car rental and air tickets, because it covers insurance and pay high when the airplane crashes;
One for regular expenses, because you get 5% rebate;
One for foreign transactions such as Skype payment or airport shopping outside US, because it does not have the extra fee.

Regarding bodyshop cost, one case was estimated by the police for $3500 and it ended up with $9960 at Toyota Collision Center.  It might have been $2700~$3200 at some lower places without total repair.

My two cents,
Jack
