Chris Waid of ThinkPenguin has offered to sponsor PorcFest in the name of ForkFest for $6,000 with essentially the same deal as was given to the Shire Free Church for ForkFest sponsorship, with some minor tweaks. As I’ve said before, PorcFest (and by extension the FSP) really could use this money.

Jess and I both agree with this sponsorship. Do we have the backing of the FSP board to move forward with this sponsorship?

Can we ask ForkFest not to use explicitly anti-FSP marketing as they did last year? (Something about “an event without shadowy figures controlling your precious bodily fluids” on the flyers as I recall.)

That was not “ForkFest.” That may have been someone who attended ForkFest, but since ForkFest is decentralized, it could not possibly have been ForkFest. However, yes, I will absolutely mention that to Chris, even though he has no control at all over what individuals do.

Got it. Thanks. I don’t personally have a problem with what you suggest then. –J

I am fine with receiving this money, with the caveat that I still do not understand the FSP policy regarding Ian.

My primary request was and still is that the organization follow the policies it has committed to (i.e. publicly stated and not retracted or amended). If the FSP no longer wants to follow a policy it has committed to, then the organization ought to amend its stated policies rather than ignore them.

As I expressed on Sunday, I would have read the stated policy as allowing receiving this money originally. I was assured by other board members that that was a result of ambiguous phrasing and the intent of the policy was to prevent connections like this. Other board members also assured that the existing policy would be updated, which has not happened. Without this, it is not possible for me to have a firm opinion, especially since my interpretation of the original policy would have been to allow this. What is the standard by which the board will or will not associate with Ian? Was the problem that the money came from him directly or that an organization he helps run? If the latter and this money is still from ForkFest, what's the difference?

I still need answers from at least one more board member. Matt? Carla?

On further reflection, Jess and I have decided that, as PorcFest producers, and since there is nothing about this sponsorship that “violates the spirit” of a former board decision, we will accept this sponsorship in 24 hours. That will give the remaining board members time to respond, if they choose. Of course, it remains in the power of the board to reverse our decision if they choose.

I'm just catching up on emails.... Whoo-boy.
First, thank you, Rodger and Jessica for continuing to work on PorcFest. This shows deep integrity and I appreciate it. Please let me know how I can help.
If I have it right regarding this sponsorship from ThinkPenguin for PorcFest obo Forkfest, and that to the extent possible, with no bad mouthing (since who would accept money just to let someone trash talk you?), I agree with your approach to accept it.
Fwiw, I am sorry to see you go from the board.

Carla, yes, it seems you have the facts correct. Thank you for responding. I thought you may already be out of the country, so I wasn’t sure if you would be able to. Either way, have a safe trip when you head out!

I’ve CC’d Steven Villee as Treasurer. Steve, can you please send me the correct Bitcoin address so I can forward that to Chris Waid?

Rodger,

Please have Chris Waid send the bitcoin to this address:

Chris says he has sent the BTC to that address. Can you confirm, Steve?

As an aside, it has been my understanding that it is the policy of the Executive Director, Rachel, at least, if not the policy of the board, to convert crypto to FRNs when it is received. Can anyone confirm that this is the policy and confirm that this will be happening to this crypto payment when received?

Nothing yet. It may take a while for the transaction to be confirmed. Chris should be able to look at the blockchain to see if it's still pending.

On your other question, we actually have an ongoing problem there. Our Coinbase account is actually the personal account of Séamas Oscalaidhe, a former treasurer. When Emmett Harris was treasurer he set up the nickname "Emmett Harris" for the account, it's still the personal account of Séamas. About a year ago Coinbase clamped down and prohibited us from selling our bitcoin with proceeds to our Bank of America checking account.

I haven't been too happy with Coinbase anyway, because their support is so slow. As you may recall, last September I was pushing to open an account with Gemini, a competitor of Coinbase. This would require social security numbers and photo IDs for all board members and officers. (I believe opening a "proper" Coinbase account for Free State Project would require the same information.) Not all board members responded to my request, so that's still on hold.

So we'll have to get creative with converting the bitcoin from Chris into FRNs. I could transfer the bitcoin to my personal Coinbase account, sell it from there with proceeds to my personal checking account, and then write a check to FSP.

Thanks, Steve. Here is the transaction on the blockchain. Looks good to me. https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1DAxpZHp1C5zVuyVwbvNAtNsMXaGmDKY2v

Also, thanks for the history on the crypto. I agree that Coinbase would likely have the same requirements as Gemini, and I, like you, am not a super fan of Coinbase. Hopefully the board will get you the needed information to get this situation resolved. It is a bit scary that the FSP is using the personal account of someone who is not on the board or an officer of the organization.
