I agree with your assessment below. Ignoring whether the current policy is good or not, it was the opinion of Jess and I, and I am pretty sure Rachel as well, that the original donation was not against the current policy.
I will make the point that the FSP lost approximately $1,500 in crypto price increase on this deal by having to return the initial money. What a waste.

I did not pay much attention to this email when it was sent but after reading it I am increasingly uncomfortable with this.
I support the FSP following its policies. If the FSP wants to do something contrary to its policies, then the solution is to change the policies. It's not necessary for me to agree with every policy an organization has to support it or contribute to it. But it is necessary to me that an organization abide its own rules and standards.
My recollection (no minutes or notes are available AFAIK) of the meeting on 4/7 was that the reason this money was being returned was because it was already intended to be against policy to receive it and that if the policy was unclear on this it would be updated to reduce or eliminate the ambiguity.
This email says it is against the spirit of the policy (i.e. not against the policy). I would not have supported rejecting it on these grounds.
At this point, the money has been returned and essentially re-received through another intermediary, so I'm not requesting anything change. However, should this or a similar situation come up again, I would not be in favor of this outcome without a formal policy change.

I’m not sure how returning the crypto will work. Julia, did Rachel talk to you about our crypto accounts? I assume if we can’t just send back the crypto, we’ll have to send FRNs in the original amount. –J

Who will be informing Ian and coordinating the return of the funds? Neither Jess nor I have access to the crypto to return the funds.

Hi Jess and Rodger,
Hope you’re staying nice & dry today. I just realized that on my welcome message to Julia I cc’ed bo...@fsp.org, so you probably know already about the discussion we had at yesterday’s meeting. In brief, the board realized that the Forkfest sponsorship runs afoul of the existing policy on business relationships with Ian Freeman, and so we were all agreed that it really shouldn’t go forward. If we wanted to revisit that policy we could, but then we have had that discussion too.
This is to take away nothing from the great work you’re doing on PorcFest, and we realize that this does create a small financial hole for you. We won’t hold you responsible for that hole! We’re also going to try to make up for it by bringing in new sponsorships. (I just sent in E3NE’s $2500 today!)
Thanks as well for your willingness to be flexible on this and take the higher road. I really appreciate it.
All best,
Jason
