Not sure if this relates to your marine laboratories of the future but
there are numerous defacto marine sites that have a long history of
research but are not listed as a NERRS, Marine Sanctuary, etc. It
would be useful to have a national database of such sites. For
example, Barn Island in Connecticut has continuous wetland research
since 1947. In the last decade we discovered the recurrence of
'erosion' of the upland border. This happens ~20 years and is likely
due to the metonic cycle. These could also be valuable sites/field
laboratories to answer climate change questions.
