Nice sightings Alex.

I also saw ten White-fronted Chats at Mogareeka on Thursday. I hadn’t seen them there before and I spend a lot of time at Mogareeka every summer.

For anyone interested, Hooded Plover X1 is a male who was banded at Picnic beach on 25/03/2013. He lost his long time partner Z8 in 2020 but another female turned up and stayed with him. The last few years they’ve spent most of the time at Bithry Inlet. The immature hoodie is not theirs. In 2023/24 they didn’t have any breeding success despite one attempt at Picnic and several attempts at Bithry. Foxes are a problem at both sites.

Thank you. I myself haven't seen WFCs over the years I have lived in the area, nice to see them here.

Thank you for that info Leo, that's interesting. Is that unusual seeing an immature joining a new adult pair? I'm also wondering how females and males are identified?

Outside of breeding season, it’s not unusual to find young Hooded Plovers hanging out with non-related adults for a while. It’s a different story from August onwards.

When the birds are banded and flagged, a small blood sample is taken along with all the physical measurements. When the blood sample is sent off for analysis, they can determine the sex along with all of the other data of interest. There is no way to differentiate them by appearance.
