Which cities have the highest rates of murder worldwide? According to the The Mexico Citizens Council for Public Security, the very worst of them are concentrated in Mexico, Venezuela and Honduras. In 2015, Caracas in Venezuela topped the list with 119.87 murders per 100,000 people.
San Pedro Sula in Honduras came second with 111.03 homicides per 100,000 people while San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, rounded off the top three with 108.54 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Earlier this month, the US State Department issued a warning about Honduras to US citizens, saying that the level of kidnapping, crime and violence there remains critically high.

ANALYSIS:
I did a quick calculation of the murder rates of Chicago and Juarez, using the numbers we have now for homicides in each city. Chicago's population is about 2.7 million; with the number of 487 homicides so far this year, it comes to a murder RATE of 18... That is 18 murders per 100,000 people.
Juarez has a population of about 1.3 million. So far this year, about 280 people have been victims of homicide. This comes to a murder RATE of 21... 21 murders per 100,000 people. In terms of that "11 murders in one weekend in Chicago," I believe that there were 7 people killed this past weekend in Juarez. Considering the population difference, that is a pretty similar rate. [Actually, El Diario reported on August 31 that there were 11 people murdered in Juarez this weekend.]
The actual rate in Juarez is slightly higher than Chicago's. One factor is that Chicago is about double the population of Juarez and from what I have read, most of Chicago is quite safe. However there are some parts of the city where the gang violence is extreme. For example:
http://homicides.redeyechicago.com/neighborhoods/
The large population of the city (much of it in relatively safe/non-violent neighborhoods) dilutes the terrible death toll of the violent neighborhoods. Juarez has violent areas also. During the hyperviolent years (2008-2012) several studies have shown that most of the murders took place in the southeast and northwest zones of the city... But for comparison to the current violence, these years were extreme...2010 was by far the worst year and the murder rates in the city then ranged from 100-300... The city's population also shrank due to people leaving the city due to the violence and to the disappearing jobs at that time. And so the murder rate was even higher since it was diluted by fewer residents.
I know that it sounds cold to do these comparisons when what we are really talking about are lives and families being destroyed, but in order to understand the levels of violence in different places, it is necessary to consider population size and other characteristics of the places. FWIW, the most violent cities in the US (New Orleans, Newark, Detroit, East St. Louis...

are characterized by poverty and racial inequality. Race is not an issue in Juarez, but the economic disparities are extreme and certainly contribute to the violence. molly molloy
