Statement on Resumption of Remain in Mexico

El Paso, TX--The Hope Border Institute is deeply disappointed by the re-implementation of Remain in Mexico at the US-Mexico border, including in El Paso, Texas. Like Title 42, the purpose of Remain in Mexico was always to deter migration through cruelty.

We are disturbed by the potential expansion by the Biden-Harris administration of Remain in Mexico to include highly vulnerable migrants and asylum seekers in the Western Hemisphere such as Haitians and Brazilians.

No amount of exceptions, additional funding or efforts to mitigate the worst effects of the policy alters the basic cruelty of Remain in Mexico.

This moment requires a full restoration of protections for asylum seekers, a forward-thinking vision to ensure the safety, dignity and human rights of people on the move, and credible efforts by the administration to address the root causes of immigration in Central America.

It’s long past time to uphold human dignity and restore asylum at the border.
