Unable to edit Component settings...

This is an issue I came across over 2 years ago with this component
and it seems that it hasn't been resolved - when editing the Component
settings a success message appears along the top after clicking "Save"
but the settings themselves revert back to the defaults. This occurs
in both Opera and FireFox (latest versions). I even tried changing
the permissions of index.php in the template folder to 744 as opposed
to the default 644 but that made no difference. Anything I can do to
fix this, or is it an intermittent issue?

Additionally, instead of the plugin working it displays this error on
the front-end:

Warning: Parameter 3 to
plgContentArticleeditor::onBeforeDisplayContent() expected to be a
reference, value given in /.../libraries/joomla/event/event.php on
line 67

I see... So, given that it's been an intermittent issue for a
consnsiderable length of time now (literally years) is there a way to
resolve it? Seems a waste of time (not to mention ridiculous) to keep
an extensions in circulation that has such a severe known issue...
